FUN DOG SHOW AND FAIR - There will be a fun dog show and autumn fair on Sunday, 2pm-4pm, at Marden church. There are 11 wonderful novelty classes including prettiest female dog, handsomest male dog, best object retriever, dog and handler obstacle race, best happy waggy dog etc, all sponsored by local companies.

COMMUNITY CRICKET - Marden Cricket Club is holding a community cricket tournament which will see teams of six play five-over matches in its end of season event on Sunday. Many current players are taking part but are keen to involve the local community. Anyone interested in taking part can contact chairman Nick Ashton on 07823 773451. The tournament starts at 2pm at the cricket ground behind the Volunteer Inn. The cost is £5 to play. Marden Cricket Club would really appreciate the support of the community for this event; come along to watch even if you do not want to play.

HISTORY SOCIETY - The society is holding its next meeting on Monday at 7.30pm in the community centre. Joy Davey will present two films from the Huntlty Film Archive, one about the Welsh marches from Chepstow to Prestatyn and the other on the construction of the Severn Tunnel.

As well as reports on the fabric of the church and current financial situation, there will be updates on various projects. Marden HISTORY SOCIETY - Invites you to a presentation on Monday at 7.30pm in the Community Centre, Marden, when Janet and Mark Robinson will talk about The Port of Hereford - In the Pre-railway Age, when the Wye was the only practical way to carry goods to and from Hereford and much of the surrounding district. They will discuss the nature of this trade and how for a brief time the name of Hereford appears in the columns of Lloyds Registers.

GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATION - Members received a wonderful insight into New Zealand with a talk and slide show from Roger Umpleby. As well as many photographs of the wonderful plant life he had lots of interesting information and pictures of the islands. It has no natural bees and plant pollenation is via birds. Visitors and new members to the Gardening Club are always welcome. To join a taster evening, meet on the second Tuesday of the month in the community centre at 7.30pm. At the next meeting on May 8 speaker Sophie Hughes talking on old pinks. For more information, call secretary Len Day on 01432 880657. Winners of the single stem competition were: Peter Mann, with Cath Gunby second and Peggy Wall third. Despite unusual weather patterns there was a surprisingly good number of entries for the spring show, all to the usual high standard. Winners were: Flower class, Carol Rawlings; Floral art, Janet Lloyd; Cooking and preserves, Janet Lloyd; Children’s button necklace, Anna Skryme.

GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATION - January speaker David Griffiths of Bodenham spoke on perennials. Backed up by his very knowledgeable wife, David took us through ground preparation, composting, selection of plants, planting, care through the winter and taking cuttings. The association is a group of very friendly and keen gardeners who enjoy sharing with each other and getting advice, tips and interesting information from visiting guest speakers. It meets every second Tuesday of the month in the Community Centre at 7.30pm. The next meeting is on February 14, when John Robinson talks on a Natural History of the Wyre Forest. GARDENERS ASSOCIATION - Fifteen members recently enjoyed an afternoon at The Vern and nearby Home Cottage. Our thanks to Brian and Chris Evans and John and Patsy Lowe for allowing us to see their beautiful gardens. Afterwards we had a superb tea provided by our chairman, Janet Lloyd, at her home. Marden'S GOT TALENT - Marden church will be showcasing local talent - musical and dramatic - in a variety show on Saturday, starting at 7.30pm. The entertainment includes local singers and instrumentalists as well some drama. Tickets £5 on the door, accompanied children under 16 free.

GARDENER'S ASSOCIATION - On Tuesday at 2pm, members are invited to visit The Vern, home of Brian and Chris Evans, where a collection for the Red Cross will be taken. An hour later we can see John and Patsy Lowe's garden at Home Cottage close by. Refreshments will be available at Janet Lloyd's house in Marden at the end of the afternoon. These revised arrangements are due, sadly, to the sudden death of Mrs Peggy Hyett of Moreton-on-Lugg whose garden we had planned to visit.

SUMMER CONCERTS - The Britten Singers will be in concert at St Mary's, Marden tomorrow (Friday), at 8pm. They will perform a wide ranging programme including English music from the 16-20th century and lighter music from musicals to the Beatles plus an instrumental piece. Tickets cost £6.50 including pimms and lemonade and light refreshments. Free entry for accompanied children under 16 years.

FUND-RAISER FOR Marden PRIMARY SCHOOL - Marden primary school fete will be held on June 18, from 2-4pm at the school. Fun for all the family with many stalls and attractions. This year there will be a fancy dress parade and competition. There will also be a dance display, face painting, cake and bottle stall, lucky dip and so much more. Refreshments will also be served. All proceeds go directly to the school. Everyone welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.

OPEN GARDEN - One of Herefordshire’s finest gardens opened its gates in aid of St Michael’s Hospice, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Brian Evans. This is a garden rarely opened to the public and proved to be of great appeal and interest. Gardens at the Vern, Marden received more than 150 visitors. Homemade refreshments were served throughout the day and the weather remained dry and sunny. In total the whole event raised more than £1,600 for St Michael’s Hospice.
