SPORT RELIEF - Primary school children will be walking around the village today (Thursday) to raise funds for Sport Relief. The school is aiming to secure its first healthy schools award and children are enjoying fresh fruit and a good choice of cooked meals accompanied by a wide range of vegetables.

LENT - The Lent Course for 2010 began on Ash Wednesday and continues on February 25, at the Old Greyhound, Longtown. Lent lunches will be held at various venues in Longtown hosted by people from the parishes. The first lunch will be today (Thursday) in the village hall hosted by the WI. The next one will be on February 25, at the Monnow Arts Centre. Lunches will be from noon to 2pm and people can come and go as they please within those times. A donation of at least £3 is requested as all monies will be going to the Community First Responders. Longtown has two volunteers ready to be trained as responders. It is hoped the lunches will provide a generous donation towards the cost of equipping each volunteer.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEMBERS’ EVENING - Longtown and District Historical Society will next meet on Monday at 7.30pm, in Longtown Village Hall. This is the occasion for contributions from members. Two of them, Martin Cook, and Rev Denis Monger, will speak on the following topics: corrupt Welsh in the Borderlands and the Bevin Boys.

TIDYING UP - The Village Pride group will meet on Saturday, January 30, from10am to noon at Broome’s garden to begin the annual programme of tidying up around the village. All volunteers are welcome.

PANTOMIME - Longtown Community School pupils are busy rehearsing for their Christmas production which this year will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. All the children will take part during the performances on December 9 and 10.

VILLAGE HALL - Has new outside doors being made and the roof insulation has been improved.The next steps will involve updating the kitchen and toilets which will require careful planning.

HALF-TERM COURSES - Longtown Outdoor Activity Centre is offering a number of courses for local children during the half-term holiday. Those attending have been involved in kayaking, raft building, rock climbing and art. The centre provides a range of courses during most school holidays which are enjoyed by many children aged from six to 14. Longtown is indeed fortunate to have such a facility run by an excellent team of people, led by Mike Fawcett.

LONGTOWN COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL - After-school French and tennis clubs have begun and a recorder club will begin after half term.

HARVEST FESTIVAL - Harvest festival at Llanveynoe will take place on Sunday at 6.30pm. The preacher will be Rev Ian Charlesworth, rural officer for the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.

SHOW - Longtown Show is on Saturday in the village hall starting at noon. There will be a produce tent, dog show, pram race, Morris dancers and lots of stalls, local ice cream and refreshments. The Longtown Outdoor Centre will also open its doors for activities such as kayaking, high ropes and orienteering. Children’s races will take place on the top field.
