HOTEL - More than 100 people turned out on an icy night to celebrate the relaunch of The Knighton Hotel. Guests included local residents, civic dignitaries and members of the business community. Now independently owned and privately run, the Knighton Hotel has undergone a major programme of refurbishment over the past few years. New executive chef Sean Kyle, who has almost 20 years’ experience of the restaurant industry, has previously worked at a number of Michelin-starred venues and is the main chef on tour with the Under-21s England football team. Hotel proprietor Gianni D’Aniello said the restaurant’s new menu was created by Sean using local ingredients wherever possible.

SLOE FACTOR - The annual sloe gin competition took place in the George and Dragon between Christmas and New Year when there were over 25 entries. The judges Richard Demynn, David Owen and Marie Hall tasted a sample of each entry looking for the best texture, taste and colour. Sue Taylor was named champion, her son Algy was named grand master and Anne Mary Davies was named the master.

VILLAGE NATIVITY WALK - A group including those dressed as Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men and a star met at the Castle Inn In Knucklas before walking around the village accompanied by two donkeys to act out the nativity story. The group then went to Knucklas Baptist chapel where they sang carols and enjoyed coffee and mince pies.

WHIST - The women of Knighton Bowling Club held their Christmas whist drive at the clubhouse recently. Results were: Best lady J Powell, 2nd Dorothy Hankin, Mary-Jane Rogers, 4th Mary Grimes; Best man Reg Bowen, 2nd Robert Jones, 3rd Mildred Shepherd, 4tth Frank Evans; Lowest lady Ruth Wilding; Lowest man Andrew Wozencroft; Most fives Margaret Johnson and Ann Price; Most eights June Williams and Jean Burgoyne. Mabel Evans presented the prizes, Linda Parker MBE thanked everyone for coming and wished them all a merry Christmas. Raffle winners were Dorothy Hankin, Ruth Wilding, Mary-Jane Rogers and Frank Evans. Refreshments were given by ladies of the club. The next whist drive is today (Thursday) at 7.30pm in the bowling clubhouse.

FUND-RAISER - The Friends of Leintwardine School served mulled wine and mince pies at the Primary School before the school’s Christmas performances of Ralph the Reindeer. They also sold raffle tickets for a raffle organised by the Friends and Judith Moyle who works for Barclays Bank.

PRESENTATION - Members of Radnor Valley Vintage Club presented £1,000 to Wales Air Ambulance. The money was raised from the club’s tractor road run earlier in the year and from donations given by cider drinkers at vintage club member Jamie James’s cider press.
