SLEEPOVER - Twenty-five girls and five members of staff spent Friday night in the hall of Knighton Primary School and raised £200 for cancer charities. The event was organised by the staff members known as the Moonies – Edith Wood, Mandy Evans, Vanessa Gibbons, Pauline Vogel, Kirsty Dewhirst and Ann Taylor – and included games, spooky stories, hot dogs and marshmallows.
SPORTS PARADE - Children from Knighton Primary School met at Knighton Community Centre on Monday morning to do the Golden Boot Challenge. All children met at 8.50am where staff came to escort them to school with flags and hoops as part of the school’s own Olympic parade. During the week children are also being asked to come to school by any other means than car.
SAMARITANS - Knighton Friends of the Samaritans have been given £550 from the successful open gardens in the Cwm, organised by George Thomson and £50 from Andrew Maclauchlan who celebrated his 80th birthday recently. The money was presented to Jean Smith, chairman of the Knighton Friends by George Thompson.
MARKET - The food and craft market returns to the Community Centre on Saturday and will include a performance by local talent Menna Breeze on Welsh harp. The market, takes place on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
100 CLUB - Winners of the Knighton Town Silver Band 100 Club draw for July: £20, Paul Milward, £10 John L Roberts, £5 Sally Owens.
AGM - The annual meeting of Knighton Town Silver Band is on July 31 in the Church Hall at 8.45pm, after rehearsal.
CASH RAISED - A James Bond-themed joint birthday party for mum and son Sue (60) and David Williams (40) at the Knighton Hotel raised £1,100 for charity. Hope House received £540, Cancer Research £540 and the Wales Air Ambulance £20.
SUNDAY SERVICES - Knighton Baptist Church, 11am, led by Rev Maggie Rich to include communion. Knighton Methodist, 11am, led by Brian Wallace. Knighton Catholic Church, 11am, Holy Mass. St Edward’s, 9.30am, morning worship led by Rev Melia Cope. St David’s, Whitton, 9.30am, Holy Communion led by Rev Gordon Mansfield. St Andrew’s, Norton, Holy Communion led by Canon John Greaves.
COFFEE - There will be a coffee morning, bric-a-brac and cakes at Knighton Baptist Church on July 19 from 10.30am-11.30am.
WI - At the meeting of Tref-y-Clawdd WI on July 4, Kath Graham from Llanfair Waterdine gave a report from the WI county conference held recently at the Albert Hall in London.
She said that overall WI membership is up due to the increase of membership in inner city groups. The motion for more midwives was approved. Sadie Cole gave a talk about local postcards that she has collected for many years.
VINTAGE CLUB - Teme Valley Vintage club has donated £600, to the Macmillan Renton Appeal. During the club’s wettest ever tractor run held in April, drivers stuck it out and although numbers were down from previous years they still managed to raise the money.
TINY TIGERS - Tiny Tigers playgroup at Knucklas has celebrated its first birthday with party food and games. The playgroup was set up a year ago by a group of parents and has had a good year with lots of new parents and children attending regularly. The group currently has the functions room at the Castle Inn as its regular venue the community centre is undergoing refurbishment. The playgroup is every Monday from 9.45am- 11.45am.
