Knighton church services, coffee morning, primary school, whist, defibulator, giant apple, parachute jump and much more

CHURCH SERVICES - For Sunday. Knighton Baptist Church, 11am joint service led by Canon John Greaves. Knighton Methodist Church, 11am led by Rev Derek Long.

Knighton Catholic Church, 11am Holy Mass.

St Edward’s, 10am benefice service led by Rev John Hanna.

COFFEE - A coffee morning last weekend in the church hall, Knighton, raised more than £200 for St Edward’s Church funds.

Competition winners were Jean Phillips, Jim Morris, Lilian Bright, Liz George, Hilary Howcroft and Rose Parry.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - Knighton school is collecting old mobile phones and electrical cables for recycling to raise extra money for the school. If you have a old phones or electric cables to, donate please send them in with a pupil or deliver to the school office.

WHIST - At the latest whist drive organised by the women of Knighton Bowling Club Linda Parker welcomed everyone. Winners were Joyce Boundford, Mary Pritchard, Olwen Bowen. Lowest lady Rose Farmer.

First man Ivor Jones, second Lilian Bennett, third Allan Brick. Lowest man Frank Evans.

Prizes were presented by Scott Sharp, Shirley Moorhouse was the MC and Julia Watts was thanked for the refreshments.

DEFIBULATOR - The Bucknell and Bedstone automated external defibulator fund has received £819.20 from a new year social evening in Bucknell Village Hall. The event was organised by Burwell and Shirley Bowen and their helpers with a quiz, music, raffle, auction and food. The AED fund has also received £70 from local farmers Martin and Jane Mann. The 10 Bucknell AED responders are part of the Clun Valley AED scheme which has now trained 100 volunteers. If anyone is interested in becoming a AED responder contact Eddie Jones on 01588 640856 and full training will be given.

GIANT APPLE - A giant apple appeared on the junction between Ffrydd Road and Penybont Road, opposite Naughton’s garage., sometime late on Saturday night or early Sunday morning. So far no one has claimed responsibility for the sculpture which is made of wire, newspapers and cardboard. Knighton resident Mrs Selley walks her dogs regularly in the area and was both puzzled as to why someone would put it there the same time as finding it quite amusing.

TEME SPIRITS - It’s the time of year again for people from Knighton to take to the stage for Teme Spirits’ annual performance. Keep Calm and Carry On has been written jointly by producer Carole Pigram, Hilary Baker (musical director Katie Mohamed’s sister) and Keith Owen who has taken part in many of the performances. It is a musical set in 1940s in London. Carole said: “The stories and events are all based on our experiences and stories we have been told. Our team wouldn’t be complete without Katie, our musical director, who has composed three songs for this production and assistant producer Sandra, who is also in charge of costume.

Together, I think we have come up with a show which you will all enjoy and which I am proud to produce.” The show opens on Thursday, February 2, starting 7.30pm prompt and then on February 3 and 4, at the same times. Tickets are available from the Tower House Gallery, Knighton.

PARACHUTE JUMP - Friends Dani Sexton, aged 17, her brother Christopher (18) both from Knucklas, Philippa Kent-Nye (17) and Claire Brooke (17) from just over the border in Shropshire did a charity parachute jump at Whitchurch to raise money for the NSPCC.

The four raised £725. Dani said: “It has to be the best experience of my life, We decided to raise some money for the NSPCC because I was helped by them when I was younger and wanted to raise money to help other children who find themselves in similar situations.”
