Knighton fund-raiser, poppy appeal, draw, nativity procession, church services, santa visit, whist drive and more

FUND-RAISER - The Friends of Leintwardine School served mulled wine and mince pies at the Primary School before the school’s Christmas performances of Ralph the Reindeer. They also sold raffle tickets for a raffle organised by the Friends and Judith Moyle who works for Barclays Bank.

Altogether £400 was raised from this and from a quiz. The money will be match-funded by Barclays Bank. On behalf of the Friends, chairman Charlotte Bulley thanked the customers of Griffiths Garage, Griffiths Butchers and the Sun Inn in Leintwardine for buying raffle tickets and everyone else who bought ticket or, like Myriad Organics, donated prizes. Charlotte also said a special thanks to the enterprising Charlie Sockett and Matty Bower who ran a guess-howmany- sweeties-in-the-jar competition which was won by Helen Lynch.

MARKET - Knighton Food and Craft Christmas Market is on this Saturday at the Community Centre. After the snowy cancellation of last years Christmas market the organiser, Mark Fenton is happy with the bookings of around 30 stalls. The Llanfair Singers will be making a festive appearance from around 10.30am with Father Christmas also popping in with some goodies for the little ones that have been good. The Community Centre bar will be serving mulled wine, the Samaritans will be fund-raising at the market, Fairtrade products and a local charity Felt Workshop will also be joining in with the festive fun.

2011 POPPY APPEAL - The Knighton Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to thank all those who so generously donated to this year’s appeal which has raised locally the sum of £3,288. The branch would also like to thank all who joined them on Remembrance Sunday for the parade and Act of Remembrance at the Knighton Cenotaph and the service at St Edwards Church. The Branch would also like to inform the local community that next year the reading of the Roll of The Fallen, the two minutes'

silence, Last Post and Reveille will only take place during the Act of Remembrance at the Cenotaph and so will not be included in the service at St Edwards.

DRAW - The Knighton Town Silver Band 100 Club draw for December winners were Margaret Speakman first (£25), Penny Lunn second (£10) and Ann Smith third (£6). It is now time to subscribe for the 2012 draws.

The band relies on this extra funding to help pay its increasing costs. If you are already a subscriber please pay your £10 before January. The amount offered for draw prizes can't be calculated until the final list of subscribers is known. Anyone wishing to join the 100 club please contact Gill Wilson on 01597 824726.

NATIVITY PROCESSION - On Saturday at 5.30pm, Knighton and District Churches Together has organised a Nativity Procession with Carols starting at Brookside Square and moving through the town with Mary, Joseph and a donkey leading the way.

CHURCH SERVICES FOR SUNDAY - Knighton Baptist Church, 11am led by Rev Maggie Rich to include communion, and 6.30pm the annual Carol Service. Knighton Methodist Church, 11am led by Mr F Hooley. Knighton Catholic Church celebration of Holy Mass, 11am. St Edwards Church, Knighton, 6pm, Carol Service led by Rev John Greaves. St David’s Church, Whitton, 3pm, Carol Service led by John Clements. St Andrew’s Church, Norton, Carol Service led by Rev Gordon Mansfield.

THEFT FROM CHURCH - Police are investigating the theft of monies from St Edward’s Church and are particularly keen to speak to a young man seen in the church on Monday afternoon (December 5). If you have any information which you feel may assist police please contact Andrew Smart PC 342 at Knighton Police station on 101 WHIST DRIVE - The annual church whist drive was held recently at Llanbister Community Hall. There were 11 tables in play with Gwyn Morgan as the MC. All proceeds went to Llanbister Church.

SANTA VISIT -Toddlers from Playday’s Nursery had a surprise when they visited Angelina’s Sweet Shop in the High street, when they found Santa waiting to greet them with little bags of sweets. The children all had the chance to tell Santa what they wanted or Christmas before setting off back to the nursery at the other end of town.
