Coffee morning and annual sponge cake competition in Knighton

SURGERY - Due to staff training, Wylcwm Street Doctors’ Surgery will be closed from 1pm on November 3 to 8am on November 4. In an emergency, call Shropdoc on 08444 068888 or ring the surgery on 01547 528523 for a contact number. Minor injury units are at Llandrindod Wells or Ludlow hospitals.

CAKE SALE - Phoenix will be holding a cake sale on Saturday at Brookside Square from 10am to noon. Donations of cakes welcome.

COFFEE - There will be a coffee morning and the annual sponge cake competition at the church hall on Saturday. This will be the fourth annual international sponge cake competition sponsored by Spar in Knighton. There will be two classes for a coffee sponge decorated and undecorated (maximum three eggs), in two age groups, under and over 12 years. Entries to the church hall by 10am. Sale of cakes from 11am. Coffee morning from 10.30am.

WHIST - The next whist drive is on Thursday, November 3 starting at 7.30pm.

SUNDAY SERVICES - Knighton Baptist Church has no service but there is a Sankey service at Coxall Chapel at 2.30pm. Knighton Methodist Church, 11am, led by Rev Pauline Long with holy communion. Knighton Catholic Church, 11am, Holy Mass. St Edward’s, Knighton, group service 10.30am led by Cannon John Greaves.

WI - At Tref-y-Clawdd WI Penny Nicholson came alone to tell members about Amnesty International. Jane Ellwood won the competition with the prettiest leaf. The next meeting is the AGM on Wednesday. There will also be a quiz. New members are welcome at the Baptist Chapel School Room in Norton Street.

MEETING - At the next meeting of the Heyope and Beguildy Ladies’ Guild on November 15, from 7.30pm, in Knucklas Community Centre, Mr Aston will be the speaker. His subject is Howey Hedgehog Rescue.

FANCY DRESS - The Friends of Knighton Primary School put on two fancy dress discos at Knighton Youth Centre to mark the half term break, one for infants and one for juniors. Children dressed in a variety of fancy dress costumes mainly on a Halloween theme but there were also several princess and fairy costumes. The money the Friends raise helps to fund transport for school trips and buy extra items for the children in school to help with their education.

RHIAN’S THANK YOU - Rhian Lewis from Builth Wells has raised over £700 as a thank you to the hospital where she spent several weeks after a bad accident. Ten years ago at 15-years-old Rhian Lewis got off the school bus at Llananno and was hit by a car. Rhian was taken to Hereford County Hospital with a very badly damaged pelvis as well as other injuries. Now 10 years on and fully recovered Rhian put on a coffee morning at the Wellingtonia Hall, Llanbadarn Fyndd, to raise money for the children’s ward. There was also a prize draw with the first prize of a helicopter ride.

FOLK DOWN THE TRACK WEEKEND - As part of Powys Arts month musicians and singers joined together for a weekend of music and dance in the Castle Inn, Knucklas. There was also a ceilidh with local folk group Bandimania in Knucklas Community Centre on Saturday night. The weekend attracted many local people as well as those from bordering counties and visitors from along the Heart of Wales railway line.

BIG LOTTERY FUND - Dolau YFC was lucky to be granted £5,000 towards an activity weekend. Club members and six leaders headed to the Prince Trust Adventure Centre in Pembrokeshire for three fun-filled days where they learned a lot.

MARKET - There was a rather spooky theme for the latest food and craft market held in Knighton Community centre when stall holders donned their Hallowe’en costumes. Mark Fenton, market manager had put a large Hallowe’en display up on the stage and spooky music played in the background.
