VANDALISM - Sometime between 11pm on February 13, and 2am the following day a total of six different windows were smashed in the Market Street, Russell Street and High Street areas of Knighton. Two windows were smashed at the Plough Hotel in Market Street with two other premises at opposite ends of Market Street also having windows smashed. A fifth window facing out onto Russell Street was smashed at the Baptist Chapel situated on the corner of Norton Street and Russell Street with the sixth being broken at a premises in the Narrows just down from Castle Road near its junction with the bottom end of Market Street. Two local people have already been arrested for two of these offences leaving four undetected. If you have information that may identify those responsible for this vandalism, or are a resident and saw what went on, please contact PC Bill Cowan at Knighton police station. END POLIO NOW - February 23 marked the 105th anniversary of the founding of the first Rotary Club.
Rotary now has over 1,200,000 members worldwide. Since 1985 Rotary has led the campaign to rid the world of the most crippling of childhood diseases Polio. The campaign has been very successful and there are now only four countries where Polio is still endemic.
The latest campaign is named Thanks for Life, End Polio Now. Knighton and District Rotary Club held a street collection on Saturday as part of its contribution to raising $200 million for the final push against polio. The money raised will boosted by support from the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation and every 20p will pay for one child to be vaccinated. Knighton club would like to thank all those who gave so generously on Saturday. Anyone who would like to join Rotary and help with its many charitable projects can ring Ian on 01547 530959. Rotary Clubs provide 8,200 shelter boxes to Haiti, providing shelter and essentials for 82,000 people left homeless by the earthquake.
Through their drinking straws project the organisation has also provided 1.5 million gallons of drinking water.

TEME VALLEY ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP LITTER PICK - The TVEG litter pick will be on March 28, at 2pm, at Offa’s Dyke Centre, not February 28, as previously stated.
FILM SHOW - A good-sized and enthusiastic audience supported the Community Centre with the pilot film scheme subsidised by Wyeside on Wheels and Flicks in the Sticks. Before the main feature film, The Reader, there was a showing of three short films – one by Knighton sculptor Andy Hazell, one by Lois Hopwood, artist from Knucklas, and one by Sally Stephens animator from Presteigne.
These short films were much enjoyed by the audience. The main film was a powerful drama with a strong cast. The next film show is Ice Age 3 on March 21, at 3pm and is for accompanied children.
KNIGHTON PRODUCE MARKET - The market will take place on Saturday in Knighton Community Centre. After a slow start to 2010 the number of stalls is starting to increase and 16 have booked, including the return of the popular Country Markets with their cake stall. There will be a new clothing stall which will be offering some bargains on ladies and children’s clothes. Teme Valley Environmental Group will be having a seed swap whereby gardeners with surplus seeds will be able to swap them for other varieties and if you have no seeds to swap you may be able to buy some including varieties from the Heritage Seed Library unavailable commercially, ready for the planting season with spring just around the corner. There will also be a Slimming World display stall in the cafe area offering advice on diets and nutrition.

KNIGHTON SNOOKER CLUB - Following the initial meeting between representatives of the Community Centre committee and snooker players agreement was reached on the desirability of getting the snooker club up and running again. However, there are still a few issues to be resolved and so another meeting has been arranged on Thursday, March 4, at the Plough Inn for 7.30pm. All persons interested in playing snooker are welcome to attend so that a workable proposal for the operation of the club can be put forward for the centre management committee to discuss on March 10. UNDER-FIVES’ EASTER QUIZ - Quiz sheets are now available from Spar and the Clock Tower Teashop in Knighton and from the playgroup. The quiz is about chocolate and sweets.
The winner will be drawn out of a hat and win a Easter hamper. The closing date is March 26, and all proceeds will go to the Knighton playgroup.
SUPPER AND SOCIAL - There will be a supper and social evening with guest artist Mervin Wilson at the Church Hall, Knighton on March 6, 7pm for 7.30pm.
This will be Mervin’s final public performance.

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER - There will be a prayer breakfast and Bible study in preparation for the day in St Edward’s Church Hall on Saturday from 9am till 10am. Women and men are welcome. The Women’s World Day of Prayer will be celebrated this year in St Edward’s Church, Knighton, on March 5.
POPPY APPEAL - Knighton and District Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal for 2009 raised £3,372.27. Mike Hiles, appeal organiser, thanked everyone who contributed to the appeal including the RBL women’s section.
BULLSEYE AT THE RAFA CLUB - A bullseye darts competition will be held at the RAFA club, Knighton on Saturday. The event has been organised by Val Hinton and Sally Ann Rowlands and will be run by Jim Morris. The questionmaster will be Iain Morris. All proceeds go to the Wales Air Ambulance. Sally Ann and Val thanked local businesses which have donated prizes for the event. Everyone is welcome to come along and take part at 8pm for an 8.30pm start.
TEME SPIRITS’ THE PAJAMA GAME - Once again Knighton’s entertainment society, Teme Spirits, put on a excellent performance when it took to stage with The Pajama Game, for three nights. With a cast of around 30 the performance was packed with singing, dancing and great acting. The story was easy to follow, costumes were bright and colourful and the stage was just right for every scene. The hard work of producer Carol Pigram and musical director Katie Mohamed certainly paid off.
