TRAINS - Campaigners for improved train services on the line through Knighton and the Marches want the views of local users – and potential new passengers – on a possible new timetable. The scenic Heart of Wales line serves Llangunllo, Knucklas, Kinghton and Bucknell on its 121-mile journey from Shrewsbury to Swansea.
But it currently has only four trains each way on Mondays to Saturdays, and just two on Sundays. And the Heart of Wales Line Forum believes many of these are poorly timed for visitors, commuters, students and shoppers to take full advantage of the route, which also calls at Llandrindod Wells and Llandovery. It is looking to boost the business case for support from the Welsh Assembly Government for one extra train each way, every day. So far, work has shown a possible business case for a third train service on Sundays, with a relatively low subsidy required from WAG and subject to detailed arrangements within the rail industry. However, the appraisal has also revealed that justifying the fifth train service on weekdays and Saturdays is “more challenging”, as the costs involved are significantly greater.
“We need to identify local benefits for inclusion in the business case to maximise the opportunity of securing WAG support,” said the forum. It has now placed the suggested new train times and a questionnaire on its website at heart-of-wales.co.uk.

DAMAGE TO MINIBUS - It is believed that last Thursday evening (February 11) vandals caused damage to the rear of a red minibus parked in the Enterprise Park industrial estate to the rear of the Pontfaen estate in Knighton.
The rear window appears to have been smashed by someone throwing a small object at it. The unknown culprit(s) also wrote two offensive words on the damaged window and rear number plate.
As a result of the nature of this offence it is believed that it may have been caused by youngsters. If you live in the Pontfaen estate overlooking this scene, were walking your dog in the area at this time, or have any information whatsoever that might identify those responsible, you are urged to contact your local police on the non-emergency number of 101, by dialling 01267 222020 or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. police.uk VEHICLE DAMAGE - Overnight last Friday two vehicles were attacked whilst parked alongside each other in West Street, Knighton. One vehicle was a silver Mini and the other a black Vauxhall Astra and both vehicles were owned by a couple living locally. All four tyres on each vehicle had been punctured by a sharp slim implement, possibly a knife, although no other vehicle parked nearby was touched.
“Unfortunately it would appear that these two vehicles have been deliberately targeted as the culprit(s) has taken the time and effort to damage every single tyre on these two vehicles,”
said a police spokesman.
If you live in premises overlooking West Street, were out socialising locally between the relevant times or have any information that might identify those responsible, contact PC Bill Cowan on the non-emergency number of 101, by dialling 01267 222020 or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
