TOTS ASK DOG OWNERS FOR HELP - The leaders from the Knighton Children’s Centre took 20 three-yearolds for a short walk from Knighton Primary School where they are based to Rockes Meadow and the Dingle and back last week. When they got back to the centre a lot of children had dog mess on their shoes which had to be washed off by the leaders. Leader Lynsey Price said: “Some of the children were very upset and after a discussion with them they said they wanted to ask dog owners to clean their dogs’ mess up. The leaders and volunteers also find it dangerous because we are always watching out for cars to ensure the children’s safety but now find we are having to look out for dog mess too.” One of the children, Jack, said: “I had to take my shoes off because I had dirty poo on them and it made me feel sick.” All the children agreed to ask owners to carry a bag and pick up the poo. Rockes Meadow and the Dingle are not the only areas in the town where there is a lot of dog mess on the pavements. The children said there was also a problem in Church Road, The Ffrydd, The Cwm, Radnor Drive, Ffronhir and Station Road. Sue Jones, acting headteacher of Knighton Primary School, said: “There are children coming into school regularly with dog mess on their shoes.

Many areas in the school are carpeted and used for seating during story times, group discussions and tasks.

The cleaners do a fantastic job but we as a school cannot ensure that the carpets are free of dog mess. We are teaching children to be responsible in all areas of life and are disappointed that some adults are not responsible pet owners.”

SHELTER BOXES - Knighton and District Rotary Club, working with St Edward’s Church and other voluntary groups, has sent two shelter boxes to Haiti. The boxes, a scheme initiated by Rotary, contain a ten-person tent, a children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens, thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, and a basic tool kit containing a hammer, axe, saw, trenching shovel, hoe head, pliers and wire cutters These items enable people to improve their immediate environment by chopping firewood or digging a latrine for example, then when possible start repairing or rebuilding the home they were forced to leave. The box itself is lightweight and waterproof and has been used for a variety of purposes in the past – from water and food storage containers to a cot for a newly born baby. A key piece in every box is either a wood burning or multi-fuel stove that can burn anything from diesel to old paint. This provides the heart of the new home where water is boiled, food is cooked and families congregate. In addition there are pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers.
