12:00pm Thursday 28th January 2010

KNIGHTON AND DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB - The tree of lights at St Edward’s Church, with lights dedicated to loved ones, raised £318. This will go towards the Kids Out Day for children from local schools with learning difficulties.

Norman Thorpe, one of the organisers, thanked the people of Knighton and surrounding area for their generosity and support. The tree of lights was so successful it will be repeated next year.

Rotarians host a 1960s evening with supper at the Baron of Beef in Bucknell on Saturday, at 7pm for 7.30pm start.

The evening includes live music by Late in the Day. 60s dress is optional but there is a prize for best dressed.

Tickets are £16.50 from Rotary members or by calling 01568 770174. All proceeds go to Megan Baker House, near Leominster – a charity providing free conductive education services to children and teenagers with motor disabilities such as cerebral palsy, head injury, stroke, dyspraxia and adults with Parkinson’s disease – and Powys Young Carers, who are children up to the age of 16 who have caring responsibilities for someone who has a physical or mental illness, physical or learning disability or a drug or alcohol problem.

On February 7, at 3pm, in the church hall, Knighton, there will be a concert by eight talented young musicians. A performer from the concert will be chosen to represent the Knighton and District Rotary Club area and will go on to the next round of the young musicians’ competition. Entry is £5 on the door.

Since Rotary began its Polio Plus Programme the number of countries where polio is endemic has declined from more than 125 in 1985 to just four in 2008. The number of new polio cases has reduced by more than 99 per cent since 1985 from 1,000 a day to just 1,491 in the whole of 2008. The End Polio Now campaign to raise $200 million worldwide is being supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which will give £1.78 for every £1 donated. The vaccine to immunise one child costs just 50p so a £1 donation will save more than five lives. The official campaign day is February 23, and Knighton and District Rotary Club will be putting on a series of fund-raising events including, on February 12, members going to Presteigne Primary School to join pupils taking part in a games day. On February 20, club members are going to have a stall on Brookside Square, Knighton, and in High Street, Presteigne, where there will be information on the campaign and a collection point. There will also be a small display in ten shops in Knighton and Presteigne giving information about the polio campaign and quiz sheets will be available from the town’s libraries and in some of the shops. Around the February half term each key stage four primary school pupil will be given a book about the campaign and telling a story about a child with polio. The story was written by Knighton Rotary Club member Neil Warrington and has now been offered to clubs throughout Wales to help with the campaign.

A new venture for the Knighton and District Rotary Club which is in the planning stage at the moment is the ‘Message in the bottle’ scheme. This is designed to help vulnerable people who may need the attention of the emergency services. The bottle will be kept in the fridge and contain information about medications, illnesses, who to contact, who will look after pets and other useful information. Green cross stickers will be on the bottle, on the fridge and inside the front door. Club members are hoping to launch this by the summer. More details will be released nearer the time.

NEW LEADERS FOR RAINBOWS AND GUIDES - Knighton Guides were desperate for new leaders and were at risk of having to end their weekly meetings after long term leaders Sue O’Rourke and June Jones retired last year. An appeal for new leaders was made and, thankfully, two volunteers came forward. The new leaders, Becky Thomas, aged 22, and Laura Parfitt 30, both have experience with young people.

Becky is a former Cub Scout from Clun and Laura, a former Knighton Brownie. The new leaders both said they were enjoying their work with the Guides and all the girls are “great to work with”. They have lots of plans for the 14 Guides. These include doing the Adventure 100 badge, a special badge to mark 100 years of Girlguiding. To get the badge, the members will have to complete a variety of things including map reading, cooking, drama and educational visits. The girls are already working on a wildlife topic looking at badgers. Knighton Rainbows also have a new assistant leader. Liz Gillum joined last term and is enjoying working with leader Maureen Kiff and the big pack of Rainbows. Liz is a former Brownie and Guide from Llandrindod Wells who now lives in Knighton. Her daughter, Chloe, a Knighton Ranger, also works with the Rainbows.

Knighton now has dedicated volunteer leaders for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers.

COLLECTIONS FOR HAITI - A blanket collection and bag packing in Tuffins supermarket in Knighton in aid of the Haiti earthquake disaster has raised more than £1,036. The money has been paid into the the emergency committee fund for the disaster in Haiti.

June Jones, a Red Cross volunteer, thanked supermarket management and staff for their support and the very generous customers for their donations.
