KINGTON & DISTRICT OPERATIC SOCIETY - Will the Parrot learn his lines? That’s the question that everyone in Kington is talking about as KADOS put the final touches to everyone’s favourite pantomime, Robinson Crusoe. It’s being staged at Lady Hawkins Community Centre during half term so it’s an ideal treat for all the family. This exciting, adventure-packed pantomime traces Crusoe’s voyage to Tobago where he hopes to locate the hidden treasure shown on the map given to him by Old Jim. Blackpatch the pirate stows away on board, and later enlists the help of Jack Boot and his band of bloodthirsty pirates in an attempt to steal the treasure. Shows are at 7.30pm on February 18, 19 and 20, with a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday afternoon. Visit kingtonoperatic.com for details or phone 01544 267253.

SUSTAINABILITY ACTION PLAN - Herefordshire Environment Partnership (formed by a number of statutory and voluntary organisations) is funding a project called New Leaf. The Bulmer Foundation, Community First and Herefordshire Council amongst others, are working closely together on this.
Parish councils and environment groups in Herefordshire were approached to take part in a pilot scheme to produce an energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP) and Kington is one of only three communities selected to take part, working through KLEEN and Kington Town Council. The aim is to produce an initial Sustainability Action Plan for Kington. We need to put our heads together to look at our town as a whole and come up with a plan. We need to find practical ideas for fossil fuel energy reductions all around the town. Then, for this plan to be anything more than a paper exercise, we will need to write aspects of it into the Parish Plan, which could then receive funding from Herefordshire County Council. The initial plan has to be submitted to the various funding groups by March 31. This is far too short a timescale to do anything other than to start a programme but we must begin work immediately if we are to make the best of this opportunity to really get our community involved. Over the next few weeks Richard Fishbourne, sustainable communities development officer for Community First, will be contacting many community groups in Kington about this plan, from the Brownies to the schools, Age Concern to the Lions.
KLEEN is arranging a showing of the film In Transition, with a section on the EDAP, as well as introducing the concept of Transition Towns, for discussion on Friday, February 19, 7.30pm at the Oxford Arms, Duke Street, Kington (as part of Kington Energy week). A public meeting will be held on February 25, from 7.30pm, at the Oxford Arms, for all clubs, community groups and residents of Kington, with a panel including Councillor Jarvis and other invited key players in this project and its implementation. We hope many organisations will send a representative to discuss the implications of this project.
