CHURCH FUND-RAISER - St Michael and All Angels’ Church is desperately trying to raise funds for the day-to-day running of the church and was horrified when the church architect discovered that there were even more things needing to be done and which were much more urgent than the work that is already underway. Interior scaffolding is now up to protect visitors from the danger of falling masonry and decorative glass, both of which date back to the 13th century.

CORONATION HALL CEILIDH – As the Coronation Hall is 60 this year there will be a ceilidh to celebrate, Saturday from 7pm to 11.30pm. CHARITY AWARENESS - An evening organised between Luctonians Sports Cluband a local men’s singing group raised £500 for prostate cancer. The evening sold out well in advance with those attending treated to a posh bangers and mash meal followed by entertainment from Hobson’s Choice, a local sea shanty troop. The club is currently running an awareness campaign as forwards coach Andy Douthwaite wants to help other men in a similar position to him. John Amos from Hobsons Choice said: “We were delighted to help raise money for such an important campaign. The group members give up their time freely to help support local charities and obviously being a men’s group, felt this was an important cause to be involved with.”

BOWLING CLUB - Have you ever wondered what the sport of bowls is all about? If so, Kingsland bowling club are holding an open day on Sunday from 2.30pm onwards. All you need are flat-soled shoes or trainers. Bowls and ‘know-how’ will be gladly supplied by club members along with refreshment. Bowls is a sport for all ages so please come along, have a look at your local club and find out some more. The club is situated adjacent to the rear of Kingsland school, accessed via Coronation Hall car park.

TASTER DAY - On Saturday, The Millers Mile Coracle Club is having a paddle power taster day between 10am and 4pm. Have a go in a coracle as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend at Mortimers Cross Mill. The cost is £5 (temporary membership of the club). This is in addition to the weekly club meet every Sunday. LUNCH - Kingsland and Eardisland Hospice Friends held a very successful soup and pancake lunch on Shrove Tuesday, at Luctonians Rugby club when £1,020 was raised for St Michael’s Hospice. Carrot and coriander or leek and potato soup was enjoyed by all and more than 200 pancakes were consumed. A raffle made £187 and the knitted gardener, whose name – Abraham – entrants had to guess, made £53. There was also a bookstall, unloved Christmas presents, preserves and cakes, all of which helped to swell the grand total.

VILLAGE HALL - The much-used village hall has received a boost with a complete refurbishment of its kitchen thanks to grants from the lottery Awards for All and from Welcome to Our Future – and a substantial sum from donations and fund-raising efforts.
