Kington play area officially opened in style

KINGTON residents have opened a new £70,000 playspace for the town by raising £500 towards future events there. More than 300 people who turned up at Crooked Well Meadow bounced, climbed and drummed their way to the figure at an official opening event run by volunteers who brought the project to fruition with help from Herefordshire Council and housing developers.

Friends of Crooked Well Meadow chairman Steve Hodges said the event, opened by Councillor Terry James, surpassed all expectations.

“We coped as we had enough volunteers but it did throw us a little bit because we have never seen those kind of numbers down there, so it took us all a bit by surprise,” he explained. Entertainment for the day included a bouncy castle, a 24-foot climbing wall, a visit from Wizard Wonky and an African drumming workshop. Local police and firefighters also attended, as did staff from Herefordshire Children’s Centre, the community protection team and Marches Access Point, before the day rounded off with a duck race.

It marked the end of a three-month building scheme which saw the area transformed into a recreational space complete with zip wire, climbing tower and jungle climber.
