WORLD BOOK DAY - Pupils and staff at Knighton Primary School wore wacky hats for a Mad Hatter’s book party with Fairtrade snacks, while some of the nursery children dressed up as characters from books to celebrate World Book day. During the day there were several book-related activities including the older pupils reading to younger children in the school.

SUPPER WITH MERVYN WILSON - A hot supper with entertainment by local singer Mervyn Wilson, held in the church hall, was a great success. St Edward’s Church members prepared and served the meal for the sell-out event which raised £300 for church funds. Mervyn has been singing at local events for the last 40 years.

Churchwarden Jean Price thanked everyone for supporting what was a very enjoyable evening.

SUPPORT SHOP - Knighton Community Support Project Shop in West Street has just celebrated its first birthday. The income from the shop has been £15,705. Project chairman Clive Payne thanked the two main volunteers, Ivy Rudge and Nolly Bebbington, for all their hard work, as well as the team of volunteers who help in the shop or in the furniture recycling, which has also been a great success and has benefited many people in the town. The money raised in the shop will be used to subsidise medical trips for clients of the support project by 10p per mile.

QUIZ AND READATHON - For World Book Day, year seven pupils at John Beddoes School held a readathon to raise money for the CLIC Sergeant children’s cancer charity and the Roald Dahl Foundation. They raised £356.

Also, pupils and staff made a fun book quiz and the winners were Grace Corbett and Emily George who got all the answers right.

TALENT SHOW - Knighton Show and Carnival will be putting on a Knighton’s Got Talent Show on April 3, at Knighton Community Centre from 7pm until late. Everyone is invited to come along and see singers, dancers, comedy and variety acts compete against each other for audience support.

Contestants can register free of charge at the Clock Tower Teashop or CCF in Knighton by March 27. There will be cash prizes for the winners and runners- up. On the night there will be a bar and refreshments available. Adults £5, children under 16 £1. For more information, contact show secretary Andy Price on 07501 463784.

SALE - There will be a table sale and coffee morning at the church hall, Knighton on Saturday, 10.30am to noon. Tables are still available at £5 each. To book, phone 01547 520061 or 528260. There will be stalls selling cakes, books, china and produce and a prize draw. All proceeds to St Edward’s Church funds.

SLIDE SHOW - There will be a slide show presented by Richard Wood on courts, castles and cottages in Knighton Church Hall on Thursday, March 25, at 7pm. Admission, £5, will include coffee. Profits go to St Edward’s Church restoration fund.

EASTER LILIES - Lilies will be placed in St Edward’s Church during Easter. If anyone would like to contribute to the cost of a lily in memory of a loved one contact Vera or Jean on 01547 528605 or 529260. A full list of those remembered will be on display at the back of the church during Easter weekend.

FILM SHOW - The second of the pilot film shows at Knighton Community Centre will be on Sunday at 3pm, and is Ice Age 3 (Dawn of the Dinosaurs).

The community centre management committee asks that children under 12 be accompanied by adults. Children’s tickets cost £2.50, adults £3.50. This is a trial and the future of the film show will depend on community support. As before, the committee will need help with setting up and putting away chairs, and with ticket sales and refreshments.

Penny Nicholson, secretary, thanked those who helped last time and asks volunteers to contact her.The final show in the pilot scheme will be The Baker on April 16, at 7.30pm.

WHIST - The next whist drive organised by the ladies of Knighton Bowling Club will be on Thursday, March 25, at the bowling club, starting at 7.30pm.

CRIB COMPETITION - The annual Glyn Davies Memorial Crib competition raised £100. This money was presented to Brian Jones and Glen Moorhouse of Knighton First Responders by main organiser Ivor Davies. The competition took place last month and was won by Alan Jones and Ray Fowkes, runners up were Jamie Licence and Glen Moorhouse. Ivor Davies thanked everyone who took part, those who donated prizes and the George and Dragon in Knighton for the food and hospitality.
