ILLEGAL MONEY LENDING - An event about illegal money lending and loan sharks is taking place tomorrow (Friday) at Jubilee Court, Kilvert Road, Newton Farm, between noon and 3pm. The event is organised by Newton Farm Community Association, Birmingham City Council and Herefordshire trading standards, and will be opened by the deputy mayor of Hereford, Councillor Len Tawn.

FOR OLDER DRIVERS - Problems with roundabouts or road signs? Unsure about speed limits? Herefordshire Advanced Motorists are running a refresher day for the older driver at the Hereford Musical Theatre premises in Whitecross Road on March 8 from 10am to 4pm. Led by a professional trainer, helpful advice will be given on all aspects of driving, as well as updating knowledge of The Highway Code. The day includes the opportunity for a short, practical assessment of driving by a qualified advanced driver/mentor.

PALESTINE SOLIDARITY - Hereford Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a candlelit vigil in remembrance of those killed in the most recent Israeli assault on Gaza. The group read out the names of the 170 Palestinians and three Israelis killed in the attack, with a moment’s silence after each name. The vigil in High Town was attended by about 15 campaigners and was joined by members of the public. Campaigners, with banners and flags, also called for an end to the siege on Gaza and freedom for Palestine.

COLLECTION - Longtown Mountain Rescue Team, a registered charity, will hold a collection in High Town on Wednesday. The team of about 40 volunteers relies on donations to cover all running costs and attend call outs across the Black Mountains, Herefordshire and South Wales as well as assisting police in searches such as that for April Jones in Machynlleth. HEREFORD ST ETHELBERT PROBUS CLUB - The club's annual barbeque was held in August in a member's garden. The weather was kind and all had a pleasant time with good food and good company in attractive surroundings. The next social event is a skittles evening later this month. Recent talks at the weekly Tuesday morning meetings at the Kindle Centre have been interesting, the latest being an update on major city developments given by Hereford Futures. Six members of staff took part in the Race for Life and the school supported them with various fund-raising activities.

Patients in Herefordshire can now access the latest CT scanning technology which boasts reduced exposure to radiation. Around 11,000 people in the county have a CT (Computerised Tomography) scan each year to help diagnose and monitor health conditions. Vanessa Lewis, service unit manager at Wye Valley NHS Trust, said: “We’re very pleased with this new investment which means that patients have access to the latest CT scanning technology. “The scanner offers patient-friendly CT imaging providing excellent diagnostic image quality, while reducing radiation.”

PLANNERS’ WALK - Andrew Banks, Roland Close and Edward Thomas, three town planners from Herefordshire Council, together with former colleague Neil Robertson, completed a sponsored walk from Matlock Bath to Buxton in the Peak District to raise money for the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) in Hereford. NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN - The Hereford branch turned to the subject of education for its May meeting. The speaker was John Sheppard, principal of the Hereford Academy. He explained the transfer from Haywood High to the academy. Initial sponsorship came from an anonymous donor and it is now funded directly by government.

PROBUS THREE - The highlight of the past month’s weekly programmes was the talk given by Jo Mary Stafford, based on the book Light in the Dust, an account of her childhood life in Walsall in the 1940s and 50s. Her talk and readings from the book initiated a very lively response from Probus members who were able to relate to many of her experiences.

FAREWELL TO HOMOEOPATH - Colleagues at Hereford Centre for Natural Health recently said farewell to Jill Etheridge, who has been a homoeopath and healer there for almost 24 years. At a bring-and-share supper and gift presentation there was much reminiscing about the development of the centre since the popular homoeopath joined as Jill White.

INVESTITURE AT BELMONT ABBEY - Liam Creed is having a special Investiture at Belmont Abbey in Hereford. Liam is a Beaver at 4th Hereford St Martin’s and is six years old. He made his scout promise receiving his group scarf and was welcomed as a new member to the scout family. His investiture took place after the Beavers enjoyed a visit to the Abbey, with Brother Bernard acting as guide.

VALENTINES - A vivacious Valentine’s Day was on the cards at the Kindle Centre in Hereford for older vulnerable residents in South Wye. The free event provided nearly 50 local residents with a homemade lunch and dessert, along with entertainment courtesy of the Hereford Music Pool. Lara Latcham, chief executive of the Kindle Centre, said: “We were privileged to have received a small grant from Herefordshire Council’s Get Warm, Stay Warm Project via the Department of Health’s Warm Homes, Healthy People fund, which enabled us to provide a second worthwhile event for the residents of South Wye. We work hard to provide a range of activities and events throughout the year, especially those which benefit the south of the city and our Vivacious Valentines afternoon was another roaring success.”

HOSPICE CASH - A performing arts school invited students’ parents to join them in class in aid of charity. The aspiring actors, singers and dancers at Stagecoach, based at Lower Eggleton, raised £300 for Acorns Children’s Hospice and Interact, which runs workshops across the country for young people with educational, physical and financial needs.
