GLADESTRY REMEMBERS - A service of remembrance was held around the village war memorial when wreaths and poppies were laid to remember the fallen from Gladestry and Colva in two world wars.

Beth Clarke read an account of Ellis Humphrey Evans, a son of a farmer from North Wales who served in the First World War. Although a pacifist, the young man joined up so that his younger brother, Bob, could stay at home to help look after the farm. A gifted poet, Ellis won the coveted National Eisteddfod chair. Unfortunately, he died six weeks before the presentation. The chair was draped in black and is kept at Mr Evans’ home, even now, still draped with a black cloth.

A time of silent prayer and reflection was held to remember those who have died in past wars and those who have died in the more recent conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan.

RECYCLING - A new recycling facility for plastics and cans has been sited at the village hall car park.

SCHOOL NEWS - Gladestry Primary School has achieved Basic Skills Quality Standard award and is proud to be one of the first schools in Wales to achieve this. The award rounded off a year which included the excellent inspection by ESTYN, two Healthy Schools awards and a second green flag. Manufacturing week will take place at the end of November and items made will be sold at the school’s annual Christmas fair on Saturday, November 28, in the village hall, at 10am. A community coffee morning will be held at the school on Friday, December 11, at 11am (the last community coffee morning raised £113 for Macmillan Cancer Support). The Christmas carol concert will be held in St Mary’s Church on December 17, at 3.30pm.
