Mapping out Ewyas Harold’s past

EWYAS Harold residents brought pieces of the past to the children of its future as part of a local history project.

Parents, grandparents and villagers responded to an appeal from primary school pupils who were tasked with finding 100 objects that give clues to the village’s background.

They brought artefacts ranging from Victorian Christening gowns and flat irons to dressed stone fragments from Dore Abbey and the wooden remnants of a barrel and a water wheel, while sharing the stories behind them.

Students also studied old photos and attendance registers from their school and were amazed to discover a picture that showed the current route of the road through the village was once the course of the river.

Class teacher Charlotte Morris said: “We’re really grateful to the local community for supporting our project and sharing their memories, artefacts and knowledge with the children.”

The event was the first of an extended scheme funded by arts charity Bright Space, to encourage more creativity in youngsters. It will culminate in a village exhibition later this year.
