SOCIAL WHIST DRIVE - A record number of players came to the New Strand for the first whist drive in 2012. MC Phillip Jenkins welcomed several new players. Prizes were won by Anne Preece, Kath Jenkins Nocky Handley, Krit, Olive Howells and Phil Farmer.

WILLOW WEAVING - There will be willow weaving sculpture day at Woodehouse Farm, Lemore, on February 4. Taking place indoors the cost per person is £35, which includes tuition, the willow, a soup lunch and a donation to Leominster-based charity Echo. CINEMA - Tomorrow (Friday), the first film in the 2012 season will be The Baker (12A), a comedy thriller. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm.

EARDISLAND IN BLOOM - Members met in the Cross Inn on Wednesday evening. Among subjects discussed were plans for two open events in the spring/summer, including a plant/seed swap incorporating a coffee morning and a talk on bees with the opportunity to get up close to an active hive. Further plans were discussed regarding the new children’s allotment. February 27 was set for the second AGM, in the Swan pub at 7.30pm, followed by a general meeting.

VILLAGE HALL - In association with Arts Alive, the Northumberland Theatre Company will be presenting Hansel and Gretel in the village hall tomorrow (Friday). The performance starts at 7pm. Tickets are obtainable at the Village Stores, costing £8 for adults and £4 for children. Further information from Paul Cheetham 01544 327413. Once again the Christmas lunch was very successful and raised more than £150 for the charity Hereford Open Door. Future Sunday lunches will be on February 12, April 15, October 14 and December 16. The next meeting of Eardisley Group Parish Council will be in the hall at 7.30pm on Monday. When the WI gathers for its January meeting, Nick Baker will be speaking on the subject of alternative energy in Eardisley.

Eardisland Burns' night and concert

BURNS’ NIGHT - The Twinning Association is holding another Burns’ Night on Saturday, January 21, at 7.30pm. This year’s venue is Burton Court, by permission of the Simpson family, with music by Dave Rodgers and his band. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children, available from the village shop, tea rooms or any committee member.

SOCIAL WHIST DRIVE - The last of the monthly whist drives was held at the New Strand on December 19. There was a record attendance and prizes were won by Sue Holdaway, Irene Hills, Graham Hammonds, Mary Gates, Anne Preece and Rose Howells.

CHURCH - A very well attended Christmas bazaar took place in Saint Mary Magdalene Church on December 10. The service of nine lessons and carols will be on Sunday, at 6.30pm. Wednesday, carol singers will be going round the village. Proceeds from the money they hope to collect will be donated to CLIC, a charity which supports children and young people who suffer from cancer.

EARDISLAND IN BLOOM - The group met in The Swan pub on December 5, to formulate plans for next year with a new record of thirteen in attendance. The secretary gratefully acknowledged receipt of £175 to date in donations from local businesses which will be used to help further improve the local environment over the next few months. A date of May 19, was agreed for a new plant and seed swop to be held in the village hall, whilst further plans were discussed for a bee keeping open day next June. Spring bulbs have been planted around the junction with Burton Lane and a sizeable part of the new children's allotment has been turned over, with the remainder covered for the winter period. The group will next meet on January 11, at 7.30pm in the Cross Inn.
