PRIMARY SCHOOL - Mr David Beddard is the new school improvement adviser who will work with the school to support school development. The progress made by pupils last year puts the school in the top 30 per cent of schools nationally for progress in English and the top 14 per cent in maths.

PARISH COUNCIL - The November meeting was told the Red Cross has still not submitted an impact assessment for the village warden scheme to Herefordshire Council adult social care. Concern again raised over need for repair of footpath stile in Priorsfield.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - Just over a year ago MP Jesse Norman visited our school and was so impressed when he met the members of our school council that he offered them the treat of visiting his workplace. During the half term holiday Miss Haskins, Mrs Chesworth and Mrs Nevard set off to London with last year's school council members to visit the Houses of Parliament. On arrival the pupils were given a tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. After eating lunch in Victoria Gardens they saw the London Eye and Buckingham Palace then had their photograph taken with guards on Horse Guards Parade. A big thank you to Jesse Norman for making the day so special. Thank you also to the Ewyas Harold Fire Service for bringing the fire engine in for closer inspection by the Reception class and Year 1.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - Thanks go to all who donated produce for the harvest sale; the school council chose to send money raised to Water Aid. Donated Tesco and Sainsbury vouchers have been swapped for a variety of sports equipment. In the Golden Valley knockout football we beat Kingstone 3-1 in the semi-final, drew 2-2 with Clifford in the final and won on penalties thanks to a spectacular save by Reuben Ritchie. In the netball, the girls won through to the semi-final .

Ewyas Harold Parish Council update

PARISH COUNCIL - At the October meeting, concerns were raised over the unauthorised use of the movable metal football training goal posts in the recreation ground and the gaps in the hedge that remain unmended. The footpath stile in Priorsfield also needs attention. Coun Williams raised concerns over traffic speed on the A465 near the Rowlestone turn and asked if clear road markings could be placed at the entrance to the new Pontrilas timber yard development. PC Lea gave a report on the increase in crime in the local area. It is intended to increase the use of random night patrols in specially targeted areas. Following the removal of the mobile library service a public meeting has been held with librarian manager Jon Chedszy. A separate service will be provided for house-bound people and various locations are being considered as sites for a small community library – a further meeting will be held in the pavilion on the recreation ground today (Thursday) at 7pm. A meeting about the local development framework was held in the Memorial Hall and local concerns have been noted. Funding for the local Red Cross warden service was discussed. On pavilion usage, the football club reported that an initial meeting and assessment involving 14-year-olds has taken place and the football club will be keeping the police informed of any progress. They will also try to forge links with the school. The next meeting of the council will take place at the recreation ground pavilion on Tuesday at 7.15pm.

FEARLESS LIBRARIAN - There was a showing in the Memorial hall last week of this film made by the Rural Media Company with the help of local people, especially Graham Sprackling, retired librarian. PRIMARY SCHOOL - The school family has grown over the last year to include members of the feathered, scaled and furry kind. There are now three guinea pigs, two rabbits, six laying hens and their teenage brood plus umpteen fishes. As well as the obvious enjoyment the children gain from the company of pets, having animals helps teach areas of the curriculum such as life cycles and living processes in a very real and meaningful way. Equally important they provide a very valuable opportunity to develop the essential values of reponsibility and commitment. There are junior animal monitors who volunteer to feed and care for the pets on a rota basis. The school is also pleased that so many parents come forward to offer a home to the animals at weekends and holidays, the perfect compromise of giving children access to animals without the commitment of a full time pet. A recent visit by the health and safety officer recorded that he was very impressed with the hygiene management practices implemented after any child-animal contact. This week the PTFA AGM will be in school today (Thursday) at 7.30pm and there will be a harvest festival service in St Michaels Church tomorrow (Friday) at 2pm when everyone is welcome to come along and join in the service.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - During the Summer holidays there was a meeting between representatives of the school, Ewyas Harold group parish council, the local authority, the highways and the police when it was agreed to further explore options for reducing congestion outside the school at dropping off and picking up times. These might involve alterations to the school car park and/or the road outside the school. However all options are certain to involve considerable costs and are therefore unlikely to be financially viable in the foreseeable future. The school is making every effort to encourage other ways of arriving at school eg walking, cycling, car sharing. In the meantime it was agreed that if parents do drive to school car parking in the bay at the front of school should be parallel to the kerb and not 'end on' as this causes obstruction to other road users.
