FAIR - Canon Pyon CE Academy holds its summer fair on Saturday from noon-3pm. There will be lots of fun things to do including plate smashing, a bouncy castle, face painting etc along with Halo’s new fitness craze Bokwa. The children will be returning to school having had the holidays to practise for Canon Pyon Has Got Talent.

ZIP WIRE AND BMX FUN - On June 2, the CP Playing Fields Association had a Jubilee activity afternoon. As a result of a Grant from Awards for All for £9,200.00 the CP Playing Fields Association have been able to add a zip-wire, a log walk and a BMX track.

PARENTS AND TOTS - In a busy first term, activities enjoyed by the children and parents include potato printing, cornflour silk, making bird feeders, Mother’s Day cards, painting and enjoying a variety of toys to name a few. The Easter Bunny was the special visitor last week and joined a trip into the school’s wildlife area. This friendly group welcomes parents and tots to come along and enjoy coffee and chat while the tots play. It will be back from the Easter break on April 18, 1.30pm-2.45pm.

WHIST DRIVE - Do you like to play cards? Do you enjoy whist drives? if so why not join in at Canon Pyon Parish Hall, on Wednesday, March 14, and every second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm. Entrance £3 to include a raffle ticket and refreshments, in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

PYONEAR SUPPORT GROUP - The chairman of the Pyonear Support Group for St Michael's Hospice, June Chase MBE, was accompanied by the group’s treasurer, Iris Jones on a visit to St Michael's Hospice to give a cheque for £2,500 on December 8.

FESTIVE FARM - Canon Pyon School’s Pupils’ Voice enjoyed a visit to Festive Farm, Wellington. The children had a tour of the Christmas tree plantation, chose a large Norway spruce for the school playground, kindly donated by Festive Farm, and had a sneak preview of the Christmas grotto to be run by Leominster Lions for charity throughout December.

SHOPPING - Canon Pyon Primary School is holding a Christmas shopping evening on Wednesday, 7pm to 9pm in the school hall, with stalls from local businesses. Entry £5 to include a glass of mulled wine and canapés.

THANK YOU - May I as secretary of the Canon Pyon branch of the British Legion, thank all those who attended our ninetieth anniversary celebration garden party, held at The Old Post Office, Kings Pyon, we raised over £400 for the poppy appeal. Thank you all once again, also all those helpers young and old.

AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS - Canon Pyon Primary School has started the summer term with some new after-school clubs which the children are really enjoying. Monday is film club in the school hall with a big screen and surround-sound system. Tuesday is cookery club. On Wednesday there’s a new club with a Japanese theme – the children are learning the Japanese alphabet and common words, and some origami. On Thursday, older children play summer games and on Friday an enthusiastic group of mums take running club, with children training for sprinting, long distance relay and other sports day events.

SCHOOL - Following the wonderful Easter service organised by Mrs Kingston, Canon Pyon School was celebrating success at the Weobley Schools Partnership annual cross country championship. With well over 100 competitors from all the local primary schools taking part and with more than half the school running, there were some fantastic performances. In first place in their respective races were Sam Fletcher, Maya Tobin and Emily Watkins; and in second and third places were Noah Williams, Bradley Gibbons, Isaac Bowden and Olivia Shepherd.

SCIENCE - Primary school pupils enjoyed national science and engineering week when normal science lessons were replaced by a range of tasks and challenges set to test the ingenuity of the children, including bridges made of paper, boats from aluminium foil, building the tallest tower from straws and firing a balloon rocket along a piece of string. They also discovered how to use chromatography to separate the colours in felt tip pens.

BRIGHT SPACE GRANT - Canon Pyon Primary school has been successful in receiving a grant of £2,400 from Bright Space to enable it to refurbish the area outside class two and the play area for class one. Richard Fishbourne will be in school each week until the end of May and with the children’s help started building raised vegetable beds.

TRANSFORMATION - Canon Pyon CE Primary School would like to say a big “thank you” to Howdens, ToppsTiles and the PTA for generously donating a kitchen, white goods and wall tiles to modernise the school’s breakfast club and kitchen area. The children, teachers and parents are delighted with the transformation and, to celebrate, an after-school cooking club has started enabling the children to practice their baking skills in their new kitchen.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK - There will be lots going on at Canon Pyon CE Primary School after half term, with some guest speakers visiting. Monday will be feelings day, Tuesday is anti-bullying day, Wednesday is “looking after ourselves” day which includes yoga, Thursday is keeping safe day with a visit from a police community support officer and Friday is World Book Day when a storyteller will be in school.

FAIR - Friends of Canon Pyon Primary School and the Church of St Lawrence are holding a Christmas fair on November 27, 1pm to 4pm, at the church. The school choir will perform at 2.30pm and Father Christmas will be in his grotto. Come along and enjoy some seasonal mulled wine.

Registration is at 12.30pm and the first class starts at 1pm. There will also be quad bike and pony rides, plate smashing, a coconut shy, soccer penalty shoot-out and many more exciting attractions. Radio Wyvern Thunders are also coming along to join in the fun.

QUIZ - Friends of Canon Pyon School are holding a quiz night tomorrow (Friday) at 8pm, at the Bush Inn, Bush Bank, Hereford. Entry is £10 per team of four to six people. Participants will have an enjoyable evening while raising funds for the school’s new film equipment.

DANCE ON ICE - Skating excitement is coming to Canon Pyon playing fields on Sunday, February 7, courtesy of The Friends of Canon Pyon school. If you would like to book an hour’s skating session for you and your family on our outdoor floodlit skating rink then please call the school office on 01432 830334 and leave your details. Tickets are £4.95 each (including booting up time). The first session starts at 11am, runnng hourly until 6pm. Please book soon to avoid disappointment as some time sessions are already sold out. Hot chocolate, hot dogs, gluhwein and soups will be available to keep us warm on the day. Come along and see if Herefordshire has the next Torvill and Dean.

SURPRISE VISITOR AT CANON PYON SCHOOL - The children of Canon Pyon School had a surprise visitor on Thursday afternoon after they had enjoyed their festive Christmas dinner. Father Christmas, Rudolph and his sleigh arrived in the playground on a tractor and trailer, bearing gifts for all the children. The children were delighted to see the amazing sleigh and Rudolph with his red nose.

Class one of Canon Pyon Primary School visited Queenswood Country Park to look at season change. They collected leaves, made collages, did leaf rubbing and much more towards their autumn and harvest projects. The children enjoyed exploring the woods and learning about their enviroment.

RACE NIGHT - The Friends of Canon Pyon School are holding a race night at The Nags Head, Canon Pyon, tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm. Tickets are £6.50 a head, which include curry and a race card, available from The Nags Head or the school office. Beds and Mattresses of Hereford have very kindly donated a single bed frame and mattress to be auctioned on the night retail value approx £295. Over the summer holidays our fund-raising money was spent on new playground trail equipment, playground markings and a large wooden seating area. The children love all their new and exciting activities, thanks to everyone who supports the fund-raising events.

SALE - Canon Pyon & District Royal British Legion holds a table top sale in the garden of the old Post Office, next to Kings Pyon church, on Sunday starting at 10am. All proceeds go to the RBL Poppy Appeal.
