REMAINS of a medieval village may have been uncovered at the Brockhampton Estate near Bromyard.

An archaeological dig at the National Trust site uncovered the walls of what may have been a medieval manor house, indicating that a village – most likely the lost village of Studmarsh – may once have been there.

The dig was carried out as part of the Past in Mind project – a Heritage Lottery funded project run by the mental health charity Herefordshire Mind – where volunteers unearthed pieces of the past.

Jenny McMillan, project manager with the charity, said that everybody enjoyed the thrill of delving in to history despite the heavy rain.

She said: “It was really exciting, and a great opportunity for people to understand more about mental health problems.

“Part of the journey of uncovering the building is about not jumping to conclusions on what we have found, in the same way that people should not jump to conclusions about people with mental health problems.”

People can tour the excavation site on bank holiday Monday and Tuesday from
11.30am. Places can be booked by visiting nationaltrust.org.uk/brockhampton-estate.
