Awards honour best police on the county beat

A BLIND Herefordian who memorised 700 telephone extension numbers has been recognised by West Mercia Police.

Pervez Hussain from Tupsley has extremely limited vision but that did not stop him joining the force.

Now, on his retirement, he has been recognised with an outstanding contribution award.

"As a disabled person, I strive to reflect a positive image, adopting a ‘can do’ attitude regardless of obstacles that may deter me from my goals,” said Pervez, who worked for the force as a telephonist and recruitment administrator

“I believe that such an attitude can inspire others to achieve their own goals and wherever possible I support and advise people to that end.”

Pervez received his prize at West Mercia Police’s annual awards ceremony which also saw three city police officers named as the local policing team of the year.

• PC Keith Ramone and CSOs Leeanne Marwick and Anna Synnock, of the Tupsley and Aylestone local policing team, were praised for their “innovation, commitment and tireless dedication” to the residents which has significantly improved neighbourhoods.
• PC Ramone said: “Our beat also includes the further education colleges and we spend quite a lot of time trying to educate the students about the dangers of illegal drugs.”
• PC Roger Bradley of the South Wye team was also acknowledged and given the Paul Deneen Trophy as the best local police officer of the year.

In a separate awards ceremony Nick Barnett, who works closely with police in relation to vulnerable young people, was presented with the High Sheriff’s Award for his work in the community.

Sergeant Dave Evans was also recognised for the role he played in planning Hereford’s Diamond Day celebrations.
