Silence at a Golden Valley bus stop for fallen soldiers

TWO minutes’ silence fell at a bus stop in Ewyas Harold last week when locals paid tribute to British soldiers.

Several villagers gathered at the local bus stop last Thursday to honour Captain James Anthony Townley, 29, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, of the Corps of Royal Engineers, and Sergeant Jonathon Eric Kups, 38, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

Both men died in Afghanistan on September 21.

People of Ewyas Harold have started a new tradition of gathering for two minutes' silence every time a British soldier is repatriated.

“About 10 to 15 people come, many who have relations serving in the armed services or just to show their respect," said Councillor Richard Baker, chairman of Ewyas Harold Group Parish Council.

“There is nothing more than a few people gathering, standing publicly in silence then carrying on with their lives, it is very moving and a reminder of the price that these young people are making for us.”
