No Lords reform regrets for Jesse Norman

JESSE Norman MP has no regrets over leading the revolt that wrecked Lords reform even though it could cost him a ministerial position.

The MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire won’t be drawn on speculation over his future but says the revolt – which could also cost the Tories any chance of re-drawing parliamentary boundaries – was the right thing for the right reason.

"I am very pleased that the Government has decided to withdraw the Lords bill, it was a bad piece of legislation which would have undermined the constitution.

"The rest is politics," said Mr Norman.

"Underminded"? Surely he meant undermined. I'm not sure who made that blatant error, the elected representative of the people of Hereford, or the largest local print media outlet in Hereford. Either way, it's a bit of a worry.

I back Norman - but not for the reasons he would like! I back him because I fear an elected Second Chamber would be just another talking shop for party hacks, and we have enough of that already. Currently, even if most of the 800-odd of them are non-functional, the working core are a useful check on the Commons. Even some of the Tories who recognise what a bunch of clowns they have made way for.
An elected second chamber would only be any good if standing for election was cheap; party-political participation was banned; and there was a hefty slice of appointments from all sections of society - from the City to pensioners to the public sector to the unemployed & disabled.
I also back Norman because his little rebellion should, if the Lib Dems have any spine at all, put the kybosh on the Tories' gerrymandering of the boundaries to their advantage in the guise of "equality".

Well done Jesse. Stand up for what you believe, and take the displeasure of the PM and Whips, knowing the man in this Shire likes someone who sticks to their principles and is not afraid to speak his mind. We need a man with openness and honesty in Hereford - have you though about the Chiefe Executive of Herefordshire Council job ? - It's much better pay than you get as an MP.
