Few health services affected by GP strike

Health services across Herefordshire are relatively "business as usual" despite British Medical Association members taking industrial action today (Thursday) across the UK.

Initial indications are that most services in the county, including emergency services, are running as near to normal as possible.

Ledbury's Market Street surgery and Leominster's St Katherine's Surgery are offering urgent appointments only.

BMA strike action

The British Medical Association (BMA) says it was taking industrial action after the Government pressed ahead with "totally unjustified" increases to pension contributions and a rise in retirement age for doctors.

It is the first doctor's strike since 1975.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has estimated the action could see up to 30,000 operations cancelled across the UK, 58,000 diagnostic tests postponed and 200,000 outpatient appointments rescheduled.
