McDonald’s fails to get a late night licence

Hereford’s city centre McDonald’s has failed in its bid to stay open to 4am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Police had previously said any licence extension risked ramping up “crime, disorder and nuisance” in the city.

Members of Herefordshire Council’s licensing committee was given statistics that showed some 60 offences had taken place outside the Commercial Street restaurant since March 2010, with the highest percentage happening between 11pm and 4am and most classed as anti-social behaviour.

Police also said McDonalds was accepted as a “family orientated organisation” but customers using the restaurant during the day were “totally different” to those who were likely to use it late at night.

McDonald’s does have the right to appeal the refusal.

Does this mean that because the Police do not have the resources to Police the streets late at night we will see more and more restrictions on what can, and what can't open and when? Isn't this the tail wagging the dog?
