Tax payers will no longer subsidise taxi service in Herefordshire

Herefordshire taxpayers will no longer be contributing to the cost of providing a taxi licensing service.

A council meeting on Friday heard that the service cost around £33,000 over and above the fees paid by taxi drivers for their licences last year.

These costs are currently being picked up by local council taxpayers.

At Friday’s meeting, councillors agreed to the principle that taxi drivers should cover the costs of this service through an increase in the annual licence fee for a Hackney Carriage vehicle and a Private Hire vehicle.

The committee agreed that representatives from local taxi associations would meet with council officers to go through the costings to make sure their licence fee matched the cost to the council of providing the service.

The service ensures the safety of taxi drivers and passengers through tight licensing of hackney carriages and private hire vehicles.

a reduction in council tax would be welcome now or is the money saved just going to be wasted on something else like more new office space!!

Perhaps this council could publish how much revenue it receives from the taxi service. And then lets see the outgoings detailed in print in the Hereford times. Or is it a case of lets suck some money from some one else instead of looking in house. It was only a few weeks ago they wanted Taxi marshalls what for its Hereford not Birmingham. another idea to claw money in. As another person said how many offices and personel does it need. cut the endless throwing of our money down the drain.

Does this mean the taxi firms will increase their prices? Hereford taxis already seem much more expensive than Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Worcester, Coventry, Nottingham, Northampton, Manchester or Leicester. In all those places I've paid much less, but for longer journeys. Why is that?

I have similar concerns to the person above. I've found Hereford taxis to be far more expensive than in other towns and cities. This will be an excuse for them to increase their, already extortionate, fares even more.
