Serious crash at Dorstone, near Hay-on-Wye

A MAN was trapped in his van for two hours following a crash near Hay-on-Wye on Friday.

Emergency services were called to the B4348 in Dorstone just after 4pm after the van and a car were in collision.

The crash resulted in the van leaving the road, overturning and hitting a telegraph pole.

The male driver, who is believed to be his 40s, sustained very serious lower limb and abdominal injuries.

“Crews quickly administered pain relief before assessing the man’s injuries," said ambulance spokeswoman Claire Thomas.

"Working closely with the fire service, ambulance crews began the difficult process of extricating him from the van.

“Due to the nature of the man’s injuries and significant damage to the van it took the joint team work of the ambulance crews and fire service around two hours to release the man from the wreckage.

"The man’s condition was monitored continuously throughout the process and he was immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and leg splints and wrapped in blankets to keep him warm before being taken by land ambulance on blue lights to Hereford County Hospital."

The driver of the car sustained relatively minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for further treatment.
