LOOSE change is rolling in for a plan to lay one million pennies on Hereford United’s Edgar Street pitch.
A total of 28 schools have so far agreed to take part in the project to provide children with an extraordinary maths experience.
After the money, amounting to an expected £10,000, is laid out on the pitch it will be processed by Principality Building Society and donated to St Michael’s Hospice and the Operational Casualties Fund (OCF).
The project is supported by Lance Corporal Martyn Compton, an injured soldier helped by OCF, who will attend the event on July 9.
He suffered horrendous injuries following a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan in August 2007.
Will Davies, a teacher at Burghill Primary School who is organising the event, said: “On paper now we are three quarters of the way there but we still need more help.
“Even if people are not associated with any of the schools listed that they can still collect and bring their pennies to them.”
The schools that have signed up so far are Kimbolton, Bodenham, Whitbourne, Lea, Sutton, Hereford Cathedral Junior, Trinity, St Francis Xavier, Burghill, Kings Caple, St Thomas Cantilupe, Madley, Colwall, Hampton Dene, Leominster Junior, Orleton, Burley Gate, Longtown, Wellington, Stretton, Brockhampton, Credenhill, Holmer, Lord Scudamore, Weobley Secondary and Marlbrook.
Also participating are the Aconbury Centre in Hereford, Hereford Sixth Form and local Guides and Beavers.
