Call for safety improvements at Wilton roundabout

PETITIONS are being filled demanding safety improvements to a major roundabout close to Ross-on-Wye.

The Wilton roundabout on the A40/A49 separates Bridstow and Ross-on-Wye, but villagers in Bridstow have said they are cut off because that it is impossible to walk to Ross safely.

A number of accidents have been reported close to the roundabout, including one last Thursday when two people were taken to hospital following a collision near the Weir End and Peterstow junction.

Safety measures were put in place by the Highways Agency last year when pedestrian warning signs were erected. But residents have said that they have made little impact to motoring speeds.

“It is difficult to see what difference they have made,” said Russell Hamilton.

“There appears to be no reduction in the speed of the traffic approaching the roundabout and no improvement to pedestrian safety.”

Deborah Bullock added that children are also prevented from walking to school.

“We are told to walk to work and school if we can, but to cross the roundabout safely is too dangerous,”

she said.

“Peterstow doesn’t have a school, yet it has got a speed reduction in place.”

Ray Prichard, spokesman for the Highways Agency, said that a study was undertaken which showed that not enough pedestrians used the roundabout to justify a crossing.
