THREE rounds of voting saw Herefordshire Council fight off calls for an independent public inquiry into its conduct over the Bullinghope home affair.

A motion to make the inquiry happen was put to the council at a lengthy special meeting today.

The first round of voting saw that motion fall by 35 votes to 14 to an amendment that the council accepted the High Court ruling against the 300 homes and acknowledging that the Rotherwas access road built without them.

A second amendment calling for a specific council scrutiny committee inquiry into the affair then fell by 32 votes to 16.

The final vote saw the first amendment ratified by 34 votes to 12.

Voting went largely on party and group lines.

In July the High Court ruling that the council breached its own planning and democratic polices by including the homes in its Unitary Development Plan against the advice of a government inspector.

"In July the High Court ruling that the council breached its own planning and democratic polices by including the homes in its Unitary Development Plan against the advice of a government inspector."

And the Council refuses an inquiry!

And dear Cllr. Phillips always looks so puzzled and upset when people say the Council has a bad reputation for openess and honesty.

For goodness sake Roger: if you have nothing to hide HAVE AN ENQUIRY and let it exonerate you. The only impression given by your fear of an inquiry is that you have something to hide. It makes you appear guilty - is this what you want?

Aremach is right. We need openness, honesty and transparency. Perhaps we should start with Aremach declaring an interest. After all you talk just like a politician - but which one are you?

As you say, there is nothing to fear unless you have something to hide.
