HEREFORDIANS can help alleviate a disaster this weekend.

Local rotary clubs have organized a collection for the people of Burma in High Town on Saturday (May 17).

The main purpose is to fund the sending of shelterboxes to Burma -the scene of a cyclone which has led to disastrous consequences.

The shelterboxes include a tent and basic equipment to help people cope with a disaster and the collection is being organized by Hereford City and Wye Valley Rotary Clubs.

Ron Giles, the senior vice-president of the Hereford club, said: "The tents house up to 10 people and the box contains 10 sleeping bags and enough water purifying tablets for six months.

"It also has cooking facilities - all the basic ingredients for 10 people to live."

One of the shelterboxes, which cost £500, will on display at the collection which will take place from 10am onwards.
