THE number of primary school pupils in Herefordshire who have met the government's national standard for the three Rs is slightly lower than the national figure.

In Herefordshire 60 percent of pupils reached the expected standard for reading, writing and maths, which compares to 61 percent nationally.

However, 73 percent of county pupils achieved the standard in reading, compared to 72 percent nationally; 76 percent in writing, which is the same nationally, and 72 percent in maths, compared to 75 percent nationally.

At King’s Caple Primary Academy and Brampton Abbots CofE there were 100 percent of pupils who met the expected standard in the three Rs.

The Department for Education has published its annual primary school 'league' tables detailing each school's results in the national curriculum tests, taken at the end of Year Six.

Within the assessment topics, there are several key figures – percentage of pupils meeting expected standard, the progress score in reading, writing and maths, and the percentage of pupils achieving at a higher standard.

The progress score show how much progress pupils made in reading, writing and maths between the end of key stage 1 and the end of key stage 2, compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 1.

In this context Herefordshire pupils fared well - their overall progress was 1.0 in reading, which means pupils made more progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 1.

County pupils were also 1.2 in writing and 0.1 in maths.

A score below zero means pupils made less progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 1. However, a negative progress score does not mean pupils have made no progress, or the school has failed, rather it means pupils in the school made less progress than other pupils across England with similar results at the end of key stage 1.

Children at three schools made outstanding progress in all of the three Rs. The progress scores of Canon Pyon CofE Academy, Whitchurch CofE Primary, Holmer CofE Academy, were classed as 'well above average'.

Some schools were classed as 'well below average' for progress in some sections. Lugwardine was well below average in writing, Burghill Community Academy, Kimbolton St James CofE, Broadlands, Kingstone Thruxton, Clifford, Eardisley and Little Dewchurch CofE were well below average in maths.

Wellington Primary was well below average in writing and maths, Clehonger CofE was well below average in reading and maths, while Leintwardine Endowed CE Primary and Pencombe CofE were well below average in all reading, writing and maths.

Eight percent of pupils are achieving at a higher standard than expected in Herefordshire, which compares to nine percent nationally.

Whitchurch CofE Primary School was top in terms of the percentage of pupils achieving at a higher standard with 35 percent overall achieving a higher standard in reading, writing, and maths.
