FURTHER safety measures are due to be introduced at an accident hotspot which has seen four people airlifted to hospital in the last year.

Lawton Cross crossroads, which sits between the A4110 and B4529, has seen a second serious crash which has resulted in a serious injury.

A motorcyclist in his 70s was airlifted to hospital on Thursday, August 4 after suffering broken ribs and life changing injuries to his leg, following a crash with a Land Rover.

The crash at the crossroads was the second in the last year after three people were also airlifted from the scene of a crash in October.

Work due to start in September at the crossroads is aimed to help increase driver awareness ahead of the junction and will include the installation of red tarmac and repainting of road surface markings.

The October crash at the crossroads saw three people airlifted to hospital, including a four-yearold boy .

Barry Freeman, has lived near the crossroads for 30 years and is calling for a roundabout to be installed after a ‘long history’ of accidents at the site.

He said: “There has been a series of accidents in the last six months.

“They have tried throwing everything else in their armoury at it except a roundabout.

“We know all about the financial constraints that Herefordshire Council have and it has other priorities, but drivers seem more determined than ever to get across the road in one direction or another.

“Is a death the price you have to pay for a roundabout to be installed “It seems a very high one.

Herefordshire Cllr Sebastien Bowen said a roundabout costing £500,000 is necessary to improve the safety at the junction.

The police have released an appeal following the latest crash between the Land Rover and the red Indian cruiser-style motorcycle.

PC Steve Wood said: “At the time of the collision, the motorcyclist was wearing a white crash helmet and a yellow high visibility jacket and we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen him or the Land Rover driving in the area at the time.

“The driver of the Land Rover was uninjured and has been assisting the police with their enquiries.”
