A MAN caught drink driving was unable to initially give a breath test and ended up sucking on the end of the mouthpiece.

Matthew Davies of St Guthlac Street, Hereford pleaded guilty to drink driving on May 7.

The 33-year-old was stopped by police in St Guthlac Street after he was seen without his headlights on and narrowly missed hitting another car.

Hereford Magistrates Court heard the officer asked him to provide a roadside screening test but he was unable to do so and was sucking on the mouthpiece at one point.

He was arrested and he became confrontational before he calmed down and at the police station he was able to give two specimens of breath, which recorded 62mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath- the legal limit is 35mg.

Davies was disqualified from driving for 17 months, with the option to take a course to reduce it by four months. He was fined £350 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £135 and a victim surcharge of £35.
