A BORDER school has reopened today after being closed as a safety precaution.

Bishop Hooper Primary School, in Ashford Carbonel, closed yesterday following the partial detachment of a galvanised fixing on a canopy yesterday.

Construction contractor Thomas Vale has assessed the situation and - on the advice of the structural engineer commissioned to attend by Shropshire Council’s Premises Services - each external post supporting the veranda is now coupled with an acro-prop structural support.

Further work will be required but this is expected to take place at a later date - probably May half term when the school is closed to pupils.

Dave Mann, from the Health and Safety Executive, has visited the school again today to discuss matters with the head teacher and the decision has been made for the school to fully open.

Kerri Phelps, head teacher, said: "The good news is that we are all back in school as usual today with minimal disruption to pupils, parents and staff.

"Although the veranda is now supported with extra posts, as an extra safety precaution, it will remain out of action until further investigation has been carried out which means that parents and pupils will enter and exit the building through the doors at the front, rather than those leading out onto the veranda.

"We are now hoping we can get on with the important job of the teaching and learning of the children."
