A HEREFORD mum and charity campaigner hopes a road safety awareness day could stop other families going through the same heartache as hers.

Angela Tyler set up the Ely Memorial Fund Charity in memory of her daughter, Emma Louise Young, who sadly died in a collision aged just 23 in 2010.

The charity offers a one-off payment towards funeral costs for families in Herefordshire if they lose a son or daughter between 17 and 25 in a road traffic accident.

Now Mrs Tyler wants to take her message of being safe on the county's roads even further in a bid to stop other families going through the same experience.

The charity is behind a road safety awareness day called 'Wheels & Skills' that will be delivered by 3D Driving Awareness at Herefordshire and Ludlow College on April 21.

"The main purpose will be the campaign of road safety and keeping our road users between 17 and 25 safe on our roads," said Mrs Tyler.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service will show how they perform an extraction from a car and there will also be an opportunity for students to go on electronic go-karts both with and without the influence of beer goggles.

There will also be a seatbelt sledge, a talk and demonstrations. AA, Kwik Fit and Travis Perkins will all be there on the day.

"My message really is that tragic accidents happen. Emma wasn't doing anything incorrect that evening but something happened for her to lose control of her car and that turned our lives upside down," added Mrs Tyler.

"The importance of the day is to understand the consequences through the lack of driver awareness, drunk awareness, drugs, seat belts and mobile phone usage.

"I'm delighted it's coming to Hereford and if it can be sustained in the long term that would be great. If I can save one life I have saved £1.5 million to society and stopped a family going through heartache."
