AT the spectacular opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games last month, among the legion of Scottie dogs leading out the teams was a four-legged representative from Herefordshire.

Gracie, from Hereford, was an honorary Mauritian for the day, leading out the island nation with her owner Angie Hurcomb.

And Hereford’s celebrity terrier is now carving a career out of her new-found fame, appearing at shop openings and charity events throughout the county.

Ms Hurcomb had initially seen the appeal for Scottie dogs on a website dedicated to the Scottish Terriers.

She applied, and several months later, was parading round Glasgow’s Celtic Park in front of 40,0000 sports fans.

Ms Hurcomb said: “Gracie took it all in her stride.

“The whole day was fantastic – I’d never been to an event like that before.”

And Gracie may have brought some luck to the Mauritius team – who picked up two medals at the Games, making it their third most successful games in 56 years of competing.
