A LEDBURY shopkeeper has a good reason to put together a Commonwealth Games window display; - her stepfather was the winner of three gold medals for Badminton.

Mike Tredgett, MBE, who lives on the Hereford Road, Ledbury, took an astonishing triple haul of golds at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978, with a team gold, a mixed gold and another gold for the doubles.

Mr Tredgett said: "I was also capped 138 times for England, and another important tournament for me was the All England, the Wimbledon of Badminton, which I won three times in the mixed doubles."

And by the time of his Edmonton triumphs, Mr Tredgett had also won a silver in the 1974 Commonwealth Games, in Christchurch, New Zealand.

He said that competing on both Commonweath Games was "a privilege".

Now Ledbury visitors to the Juice Boutique in the High Street, on Wednesday August 6, can try on his medals for size, if they give a donation to a very good cause, between 11am to 2pm and 4.30pm and 5.30pm on the day.

Mr Tredgett's proud step-daughter, shop-owner Jules Schad, aged 46, is to tackle a 350km bike ride across the Tanzanian plain in October 2015, with the sponsorship money and donations earmarked for the "Women V Cancer" initiative.

Funds raised through the initiative will go to three cancer charities, which are Breast Cancer Care, Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

Mrs Schad, who will be cycling with other ladies, over difficult terrain and in incredible heat said: "The lives of a lot of my customers, and people I know, have been touched by cancer.

"This event is all about girl power - all women together, I want to raise as much as I can. You are supposed to raise £3000, but I want to raise £5000. You just have to go for it, don't you?"

She added: "The hot weather we've had has been good. I've been out in the country lanes, on my new bike, and I keep pushing it and making the most of the good weather."

Mr Tredgett, aged 65, who received the MBE for services to sport in 1984, said: "What she plans to do is great, and it will be a tough challenge, an endurance event, and she needs to be be organised about training."
