COUNCILLOR G J Powell states he is ready to consult with the public on the planned pedestrianisation of Broad Street so I would dare to suggest that the case for more pedestrianisation is not proven.
In parts of Europe, cars are being reintroduced to town centres. A mix of traffic and pedestrians makes for an atmosphere of bustle and purposeful activity through the day and into the night.
Pedestrianised areas tend to be dominated by national retailers and at night become barren, empty, unwelcoming and in some towns even hostile.
If Coun Powell is keen to encourage more people onto public transport and cycles, then buses should be allowed to run through the town and cyclists should be allowed to cycle up and down every road and paved area in the city.
Broad Street is bound to be paved as it is currently fashionable to do so but I think it is a bad, sad and unimaginative idea.
