David Williams says there is no answer to speeding in Tillington

I WRITE regarding the report (Hereford Times, June 21) that a man car was caught doing 36mph in a 30mph area.

I have been complaining to the police about the speed of vehicle travelling through Tillington for the last couple of years. Last October I made a further complaint of speeding vehicles between the Bell Public House and the Junior School, Burghill, a short distance of 500 metres.

The police tasked a community support officer to deal with the problem. He held a speed check a mile away from the problem I reported (on health and safety grounds) but still within the 30mph area.

He was stopping vehicles travelling at over 50mph and gave then a ticking off – the CSO does not have police powers to issue fixed penalty tickets for speeding.

Now the parish council has to consider hiring a speed indication device (SID) at the parish’s expense to further investigate the problem.

Once they have the evidence the speeding partnership may consider what to do.

Our local councillor has been trying to set up a speed watch scheme whereby local residents are trained to carry out speed checks but she is hitting a brick wall with the local police.

Other police forces carry out this initiative without problem and with great success.

DAVID WILLIAMS, Hollycroft,Tillington.

Stuff like this really annoys me. Most car drivers speed, because 60% of the speed limits are completely out of touch with reality. I understand that this place in hand has to be a 30 because of the school next to it but to actually go out and buy some expensive equipment is a complete waste of money. The whole road surface down that road is pretty dreadful so why not put the money into fixing that? There as not been a major accident down that road in as long as I can remember so speed surely is not such a big deal? Is it really going to hurt if you go 40mph down there at 2am in the morning?

What needs to be done is more educating road users. All young drivers get stick by old people on the road, because they think they know better and never had an accident for x number of year... Difference is these "older" people tend to drive everywhere at 25mph and can't seem to be able to to navigate around roundabouts and junctions. Do you know how annoying this is to be stuck behind someone like this? After about 10 minutes your always looking for somewhere to overtake which can become dangerous!

Other thing are runners and cyclists. I believe it should be the law for them to wear those bright green jackets, they are great! It means I can see a cyclist and act accordingly with plenty of time to spare!

These are the things that need to be done with Burghill / Tillington. Not speed camera's. That will not make things any better at all.

I would have thought evidence collected by a CSO that multiple vehicles were doing over 50mph is a 30 area would get a follow up visit by a regular officer who could take appropriate action? If not why not?

hmm well i travel this road alot and as an IAM driver I can say this. The Road is safe for a 60mph limit their are a number of Speed limits inforce that are totally unnecessary Tillington could be 40 not 30!! the 30 beginning just before hospital farms is a complete waste of tax payers money! the 40 speed limit by golf club is another waste of tax payers money....... the Road surface is appalling you can only fill so many potholes in sooner or later it needs to be resurfaced like now!..... The police well they have better things to do like Catch kid nappers, lockup rapists, arrest burglers fight REAL CRIME not sitting in a £60,000 BMW wasting diesel with a speed gun... and no i do not agree that giving local people a Radar Gun is the answer this is a very bad idea and i think West Mercia Police are right in their stance not to allow this as it will allow Mini Hitler's to cause problems for other people which will likely cause someone to take the law into their own hands.

I would also like to add that the parish councillor has spent too much time campaigning for unnecessary speed limits when really they should be campaigning for Hi Grip road surface on a certain few corners and re-engineering the road where a fatal accident occurred not so long ago (not speed related!!!)
