Rebecca Baker, Surveyor, Woodpeckers of Herefordshire project, says thanks for all the woodpeckers

I WOULD like to say a massive thank you to the Hereford Times for featuring our woodpecker project and to all of its readers who sent in their sightings of woodpeckers.

I have received more than 265 emails with records of these birds over the last three weeks and more than 50 telephone calls. This adds up to almost as many records the project received over the whole of 2011, which is brilliant news.

As I am sure you’ll understand, sorting through and organising this many records is a big task. If I haven’t replied to you regarding your sighting, please be sure that I will be in touch as soon as I can.

I must say that I have greatly enjoyed reading various anecdotes of how they feed their young or can be heard drumming on a nearby tree.

All of this information is important as it gives us a greater understanding of their behaviour.

I am collecting the records to map the locations of woodpeckers in Herefordshire and the habitats they live in so we can learn more about these species.

If you would like more information on the project and woodpeckers, please visit herefordshire.gov.uk/herefordbap.

I hope you continue to enjoy watching these colourful and interesting birds.

Thanks again.

REBECCA BAKER, Surveyor, Woodpeckers of Herefordshire Project.
