Barbara Ferris of Dinedor, Hereford, says together we can focus on our youth

After two hours at the overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Friday morning I left feeling hopeful and with my faith in democracy restored – despite the difficulties of the present financial situation. I want to thank the councillors and officers discussing the youth service review for a morning where all concerned addressed the issues with courtesy and rigour.

There was depth of concern and experience. There was belief in young people and in the community and volunteers who work for what they believe in. There was desire for local councillors to be able to support local initiatives with open and transparent funding.

Above all, there was unanimity that Herefordshire has so much to offer young people in the chance to grow and find themselves in the outdoors. There was realisation of the need for this type of open development and the mutual advantage of sharing our experiences with organisations out of county.

The committee recognised the value of resources such as the Kayak Centre and Bodenham sailing.

They have asked that should any decision to sell off such 'family treasures' be made at the cabinet meeting next week it must come back for their scutiny. They cannot do more. The meeting was entirely within the spirit and creativity inspired by the jubilee celebrations, where so much was achieved by groups of all sizes working hard, pooling resources.

Perhaps readers might find out what their ward member’s view is and whether they will be taking part in the discussion about what sort of service is possible. Please let's work together to ensure we are building a Herefordshire we are all proud to be part of.

As your editorial in the jubilee week said, communities came together to celebrate someone who has dedicated herself to our service for 60 years and is a shining example of selfless commitment to others, showing we can unite when the cause is good.
