Barbara Wood of Park Street, Hereford, says statue will detract from Old House
3:00pm Wednesday 6th June 2012 in Letters
THE Civic Society was right to question whether the most appropriate site for the statue of the bull is outside the Old House in Hereford.
Surely the most obvious place for the statue is the new cattle market development?
If not, the statue would be better appreciated if placed separately from the Old House where it can be admired in its own right, especially as the Old House and the statue have nothing in common.
Given that the Old House is an exceptional building, grade I-listed, it should be able to be viewed in its entirety rather than be partially blocked by a huge statue.
Finally, why dig up a newly landscaped and attractive area at taxpayers’ expense – losing the six much utilised benches and relocating the trees – when areas are available involving no disruption and cost?
By separating the two, the impressive modern statue and the rare historic building could each be appreciated for their own intrinsic worth and add interest to a wider area of High Town.
Alternatively, the bull could provide a most fitting figurehead for the cattle market development.
