Peter Lemkey of Goodrich House, Goodrich, says it's ridiculous way to punish this man

REGARDING your report last week of a drug addict who broke into a taxi, his punishment stretched credulity in our justice system to the limit.

Here we have an incorrigible miscreant who breaks into a taxi and steals £15 in order to satisfy his drug addiction which lands him with a fine of some £185.

I fail to comprehend such an absurd punishment.

This is someone who has no money, seemingly making a living by stealing, and our jurisprudence asks him to stump up £185.

How is he supposed to comply with this order? Break into some more taxis? Or mug someone? Or steal another bike, or all three?

How on earth could such absurd judgment be imposed on an impecunious person with little obvious prospect of income to meet this fine?

Surely, with a string of previous misdeeds common sense should have dictated a different course of action which would have taken him out of circulation for while, thus protecting people and property.

Or am I the only person to be perplexed by such a perverse outcome?

PETER LEMKEY, Goodrich House, Goodrich.

Proposterous! I expect he was an Islamic/suicide bomber/illegal immigrant/benefit scrounger/pedophile as well. What he needs is a spell in the army. They'd soon having crying for his mummy. Wouldn't have happened in my day. No, people had respect back then. All these bloody lefty beaurocrats in Brussels telling us how to run our country! We fought a war to stop things like this happening. Bring back Thatcher I say.

Peter and Luki I agree with you 100%
What a mad country we live in now! There seems to be no common sense anymore

Lol @ MM - methinks you may have missed my point sir in that I was jesting at Mr Lemkey's right-wing Daily Mail attitude :)

It is very difficult to tell when a comment is a jest or not.
Anyway I agree with Mr Lemkey's point of view, even if it is right wing Daily Mail, it is still common sense if you haven't got £15 how on earth are you going to pay £185

@ MM - Sorry, my bad....I agree it is difficult to understand context on things like this. The law, in general, often makes no sense and whilst Mr Lemkey does raise a point for consideration, it's his total lack of human compassion that winds me up.

Community Payback sentences are the best way to punish someone for a crime like this Fines do not get paid, then more Court appearances, ending with more fines. An upward spiral, costing taxpayers' money. 100 hours working on a Community Project or clearing up scruffy areas in their neighbourhood is much more beneficial to both offender and his victims.
