Phil Shaw of Ivington Court, Leominster, comments on putting up with a prayer or two

I WAS sorry to read of the distress likely to be caused to councillors by Herefordshire Council’s prayers at the start of meetings (Readers Times, March 22 and 29).

There are also many other occasions when the reference to God is printed as an integral part of an official programme.

I have checked with several ‘unbelievers’ among family and friends and have found that not a single one has been upset by having to attend functions where “God save the Queen” or “God bless this ship and all who sail in her” are uttered, or where before a formal meal, Grace is spoken.

May I commend these people’s stoicism in tolerating this sort of thing to any councillors who may be “swallowing hard and having to put up” with such perceived infringements?

PHIL SHAW, Ivington Court, Leominster.
