WHILE I agree that the level of parking fines collected by the council raises an interesting point, am I the only person who thinks that it is not the point you dwelt on?
My concern about the level of fines is not the amount the council is receiving, but the number of users who are trying to evade payment.
There are clear signs by the ticket machines and everyone should know that there is no free parking any more.
While I am sure we have all at some time come close to exceeding the allotted time on our ticket, why should those of us who pay for the time we use allow others who avoid payment of the correct amount to gain?
If the retailers in town are relying on customers who shirk paying an extra £1 for their parking I am not sure they are the sort of customers to rely on.
Of course, barriers and a payon- exit system would be an alternative – and I am sure you and your readers would comment on the expense needed to install them.
Perhaps we could just ask drivers to be responsible for their actions. After all, most car parks will allow you to go back and buy more time.
