Dr David Walter of Yarkhill, Hereford, tells of Europe’s torrent of red tape edicts

I WAS delighted to read Gary Dipper’s letter headed “Looking beyond Europe” (Readers’ Times, January 12).

We should never have accepted the sheer idiocy of abandoning our kith and kin in Australia for example, which is why we now need a visa to travel there.

The French didn’t – they just called theirs “departments” of France.

The Brussels stupeaucrats have all but wrecked Europe by a torrent of edicts fiddling with pathetic details, while completely missing important issues like governing the Euro as the Swiss do their Francs, and leading global negotiations to regulate banking industries’ excesses in the global economy.

If Occupy Wall Street got global, why couldn’t Europe?

They recently admitted that their ill-informed fishing policy had wasted about 85 per cent of our fish by forcing fishermen to chuck dead fish back into the sea.

The UK insurance industry was forced to increase the premiums of safe young female drivers to the same level as dangerous young male drivers on the basis of gender equality, instead of using actuarial statistics.

It is equivalent to asking the scientists working with the Large Hadron Collider to seek the Higg’s Boperson.

We Europeans should glorify in our diversity.

What matters is the joy of the different contributions our various nations offer in terms of trade travel and culture. The last thing we want is grey dull uniformity.

Britain is red-taped to death because we’ve yielded power to the European stupeaucracy. It is time we fought to get it back.

DR DAVID WALTER, Yarkhill, Hereford.
