Herefordshire Council shows no sign of reducing its expenditure due to the severe economic turmoil the country faces.
High salaries to senior staff are defended in a rigorous fashion and spending on projects, which seem wasteful to many citizens, appear to be proceeding unchecked.
The recent photograph in The Hereford Times (page 4; July 15) demonstrates how a total lack of common sense leads to spending taxpayers’ money in the most wasteful manner imaginable: a cul-de-sac in Sutton St Nicholas now has an unnecessary 30mph sign!
We are told in the Hereford Times that the parish council wrote to Herefordshire’s highways manager complaining that the signs were – “intrusive and an unnecessary expense”. Yet, Herefordshire Council claim that the parish council was in favour of the signs.
We are often told by councils that they must offer high salaries for important posts otherwise high achievers would not be attracted. May I suggest that in future applicants are chosen not merely on the basis of their academic achievements, but a far greater reliance is given upon their degree of common sense?
